Amazon MGM Studios is set to gain creative control over future James Bond productions, but it did not become the franchise’s sole owner. In an announcement on 20 February 2025, EON Productions said Amazon MGM, producer Barbara Broccoli and producer Michael G. Wilson would remain co-owners of Bond’s intellectual-property rights, with Amazon MGM taking creative control after the joint venture’s transaction closes.
What the Bond deal changes
EON Productions announced on 20 February 2025 that Amazon MGM Studios, Wilson and Broccoli had formed a joint venture to house James Bond intellectual-property rights. EON said the parties would remain co-owners and that Amazon MGM would gain creative control over future productions following closing of the transaction. EON’s announcement is the clearest statement of the arrangement.

The deal changes who leads creative decisions on future films; it does not establish that Amazon bought the franchise outright. The announcement did not disclose ownership percentages or detailed governance provisions. The Associated Press reported that financial terms were not disclosed at the time, so claims about a specific purchase price or split should not be treated as confirmed. The AP report provides that qualification.

Historical documents help explain why these distinctions matter, but they do not fill in the new venture’s contract terms. A European Commission decision on the MGM acquisition described the earlier MGM and Danjaq/EON co-ownership and EON’s broad approval rights over strategic decisions. Why the longtime producers are stepping back
Wilson said he was stepping back from producing after a career in Bond spanning nearly 60 years, and that he and Broccoli agreed Amazon MGM should lead the franchise into the future. Broccoli said that after the conclusion of No Time To Die and Wilson’s retirement from the films, she wanted to focus on other projects. Both statements appeared in EON’s announcement.

Amazon MGM later named Amy Pascal and David Heyman as producers of its upcoming Bond film. The announcement confirms a development milestone, not a release date, cast or completed screenplay.
