The announced deal was described as worth about $78 million, but contemporaneous reports itemized the consideration differently—particularly over whether assumed debt was part of that figure. The proposed combination was intended to broaden Power-One’s telecom reach through complementary products and sales channels.
What Power-One agreed to acquire
Power-One agreed the previous week to acquire Powec AS, according to EE Times on April 4, 2000. A separate trade report published April 2 described a definitive agreement. The available reports establish an announced agreement, not an exact closing date.

Powec supplied power systems used by telecommunications service providers and equipment manufacturers. EE Times named Ericsson Telecom AB, Hong Kong Telecom, Nokia and TeleDanmark among Powec’s customers. It also reported that Ericsson Inc., Motorola Inc. and Nokia U.S. bought Powec products as OEMs in the Americas.

The strategic case centered on product range and geography. Power-One president and chief operating officer Bill Yeates said Powec served small and medium-size telecom installations, while HC Power, a Power-One business, focused on larger installations. Yeates described the product lines as having “almost no overlap.”

Powec’s European and Asian sales channels were also presented as complementary to Power-One’s North American telecom channels. Power-One chief executive and chairman Steve Goldman said the acquisition would position the company to serve both equipment manufacturers and service providers across multiple continents. Powec managing director Jan Henrik Bryde said the added global channels and products could help Powec pursue growth in communications markets.
How the reported purchase price breaks down
The accounts agree on roughly $70 million in cash and 140,340 Power-One shares, but they describe the total differently. The available reports do not resolve whether assumed debt was included in the headline valuation.

| Source and description | Reported consideration |
|---|---|
| EE Times, April 4, 2000 | $70 million cash, 140,340 Power-One common shares valued at about $8 million at the time of agreement, and $8 million of Powec debt assumed by Power-One. EE Times separately characterized the acquisition as a $78 million deal. |
| EE Power, April 2, 2000 | About $78 million for all of Powec’s common stock, comprising about $70 million cash and 140,340 Power-One shares. The report text does not mention assumed debt. |
Because the reports do not define the $78 million headline in the same way, it should not be treated as a reconciled total that necessarily includes the debt assumption. EE Times also projected Powec sales of about $70 million for 2000 based on revenue in the first three months; that was a projection, not a reported full-year result.
Crane’s telecom product line was a separate deal
Alongside the Powec agreement, Power-One agreed to buy Crane Co.’s telecommunications product line for $14 million in cash, according to EE Times. Crane held distribution rights for Powec products in the Americas. The April 2 trade report also linked Crane’s distribution rights and telecom relationships to the two transactions. The Crane purchase was related to Power-One’s broader telecom strategy, but it was a distinct transaction from the acquisition of Powec.

What later company records establish
A Power-One SEC subsidiary exhibit from 2013 lists Power-One AS in Norway. That listing is evidence of a Norwegian entity in Power-One’s later subsidiary records; it does not establish when the Powec transaction closed or prove legal continuity between Powec AS and Power-One AS. ABB reported completing its acquisition of Power-One on July 25, 2013, providing later ownership context but not clarifying the 2000 transaction’s valuation. ABB’s completion announcement.
