Why Hitachi Data Systems Acquired Sepaton—and What Happened to Its Backup Appliances

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) acquired Sepaton in August 2014 to add a purpose-built enterprise backup-appliance line to its data-protection portfolio. The purchase price was not disclosed. Sepaton’s S2100 software later transitioned to HDS S-Series branding, but that historical transition alone does not establish whether the products are still sold or supported today.

What did Sepaton make?

Sepaton was a Massachusetts-based enterprise storage company focused on purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs). These systems served as disk-based targets for enterprise backups, using deduplication and scalable appliance resources to handle backup and recovery workloads and reduce reliance on tape.

Contemporary reporting described Sepaton appliances as capable of up to 80 TB per hour of backup throughput and scaling to 3.8 petabytes of disk shelves before deduplication. Those are reported product figures, not independently verified benchmark results. Data Center Knowledge’s 2014 coverage gives the figures.

StorageReview reported that Sepaton’s deduplication technology could fit up to 25 TB of data into 1 TB of storage. That, too, is a reported capability rather than an independent test result.

Why did HDS buy Sepaton?

HDS already sold storage infrastructure and had a data-protection strategy. Acquiring Sepaton added a purpose-built, deduplicating backup-appliance line and brought technology from a longtime partner under HDS ownership. HDS said the addition would broaden its integrated data-protection portfolio.

Sean Moser, then HDS vice president of software platforms product management, said the acquisition would help customers “reduce the cost of protection, enable more data to be protected against disaster and offer greater flexibility in where or how it is protected.” StorageNewsletter’s 2014 account attributes that rationale to Moser.

Industry analysis at the time anticipated tighter integration with HDS storage and software. That was an expectation about the strategic direction, not proof of a particular integration outcome after the deal.

When did the acquisition happen, and what were the terms?

HDS acquired Sepaton in August 2014; contemporary reports dated the public announcement to August 13 or 14. The announcement did not disclose the purchase price. Coverage described Sepaton as becoming a wholly owned HDS subsidiary, operating independently from its base in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Data Center Knowledge reported the subsidiary arrangement and location; StorageReview and StorageNewsletter also covered the deal.

What happened to the S2100 and S-Series products?

The product history documented in HDS release notes shows a software and branding transition. HDS S-Series V7.3 release notes say that the August 2014 acquisition transitioned Sepaton S2100 Series software to HDS S-Series software and management-console terminology. They also said Sepaton’s customer-support portal would remain the primary reference during the transition into 2015. The V7.3 release notes describe that transition.

Later S-Series documentation introduced HPP-S as a supported device name while retaining the SEPATON identifier for some existing deployments. It warned that customers should not switch identifiers or mix the two names without support guidance. The S-Series 9.5 user guide documents those naming and compatibility details.

Is Sepaton still supported, and what replaced it?

The documented changes establish that Sepaton’s product line and software branding moved into HDS S-Series naming. They do not establish current sales, support status, or a direct one-to-one replacement for the S2100. The support-portal statement in the V7.3 notes concerned the transition into 2015, so it should not be read as a current support commitment.
