VAST Data’s Unified AI Platform and Event Broker: What the 2025 Launch Means

VAST Data announced native block storage and a Kafka-compatible Event Broker in February 2025. Here is what the unified-platform pitch includes—and where compatibility and performance claims need careful evaluation.

On February 19, 2025, VAST Data announced native block storage for its VAST Data Platform and introduced Event Broker, a Kafka-compatible event-streaming capability integrated with VAST DataEngine. The announcements describe an effort to bring file, object, block, table and streaming data into one architecture. For organizations evaluating data infrastructure—including financial firms—the key question is not whether Event Broker is simply “Kafka inside VAST,” but whether its supported Kafka features and integration with VAST workloads fit their systems and operating requirements.

What VAST Data announced

VAST said native block storage completed its unified platform architecture, which spans five data types: file, object, block, table and streaming. The company positions the platform as combining storage, databases and virtualized compute services for AI and analytics workloads.

Event Broker is the platform’s native event-streaming engine, integrated with VAST DataEngine. Its Kafka-compatible API is intended to let applications produce and consume events, query topic data, run analytics and trigger AI or event-driven workflows within the VAST environment. It is a VAST capability rather than a standalone broker product.

Why the unified-platform claim matters

The architectural pitch is to connect streaming data with storage and database services on the same platform, rather than requiring a separately maintained Kafka cluster for those workflows. That may be relevant when an organization wants event data to feed analytics or AI applications close to its other data services. The announcement alone does not establish that a separate Kafka deployment can be removed: that depends on the application’s Kafka feature requirements, workload tests and operational design.

How Event Broker differs from a drop-in Kafka replacement

VAST describes Event Broker as Kafka-compatible, but compatibility is not the same as implementing every Kafka API or client behavior. VAST’s documentation lists producer and consumer APIs, consumer groups, topic queries, selected administrative operations, topic compaction and SSL support. It also lists exclusions and limitations that can affect application migration.

Area What VAST documents Practical implication
Producer and consumer APIs Supported Check the specific client library and features your applications use; API support alone does not guarantee behavior-by-behavior compatibility.
Consumer groups Supported, with some consumer-group features limited or unsupported Validate group coordination and recovery behaviors used by each consumer.
Topic queries Database queries on topics are supported This provides a documented route to query event data, but does not establish compatibility with every Kafka Streams or SQL tool.
Administration Selected admin operations are supported; automatic topic creation is not Plan topic creation and administration explicitly rather than assuming a Kafka default will work.
Delivery and transactions Transactions and idempotent producing are unsupported Applications that depend on transactional publishing or idempotent producer behavior need another design or should retain a compatible broker.
Limits Messages up to 1 MB; up to 20,000 partitions per topic and 200,000 partitions per Event Broker view Compare these ceilings with expected message sizes and partition counts before deployment.
Security SSL is supported Confirm the required authentication, authorization and certificate-management model for the intended environment.

These are documented capabilities and limits, not a guarantee that every Kafka client version or application will behave identically. A migration assessment should test the actual producer, consumer, admin and recovery paths in use.

What VAST’s performance figures do—and do not—show

At launch, VAST claimed more than 10 times Kafka performance on like-for-like hardware and more than 500 million messages per second across its largest cluster deployments. Separately, a VAST white-paper benchmark reported six times higher message throughput per broker than Apache Kafka on identical hardware. These are vendor-reported claims, not independent third-party measurements. The available figures do not establish latency, workload mix, message size, durability settings or other conditions needed to predict results for a particular deployment.

For a fair evaluation, compare both systems using the same hardware and workload, and measure throughput and latency alongside failure recovery, security, replication, observability and the engineering work required to operate the system. A peak throughput number by itself is not enough to decide whether Event Broker can meet an application’s service requirements.

How Event Broker is configured on a VAST cluster

Event Broker configuration is an infrastructure task on a VAST cluster, not just a client-side endpoint change. VAST’s configuration guidance calls for a virtual IP pool, a user with required S3 permissions, and a view with the Kafka protocol enabled.

  1. Provide a virtual IP pool. Configure the pool with the protocol roles needed for the deployment. A Kafka-enabled view can be associated with only one virtual IP pool.
  2. Configure a user. Set up a user with the required S3 permissions for the view.
  3. Create or configure the view with Kafka enabled. Enabling Kafka also enables the S3 Bucket and Database protocols for that view.
  4. Validate client behavior and limits. Test the intended Kafka clients and workflows, including topic administration, message size, partition counts and any consumer-group features in use.

The automatic enabling of S3 Bucket and Database protocols is an architectural consideration for administrators: confirm that the view’s protocol configuration matches the intended environment and access controls.

When it may fit a financial organization

Financial institutions often evaluate data platforms against a mix of streaming, analytics and AI requirements, but the announcement does not describe finance-specific deployments or compliance outcomes. A practical evaluation should start with the workloads and controls the organization actually needs rather than assuming that a unified platform automatically satisfies them.

  • Consider a proof of concept if event streams must feed VAST database queries, analytics or AI workloads and the documented Kafka limitations are compatible with the applications.
  • Keep or plan for a separate broker if critical applications rely on transactions, idempotent producing, automatic topic creation or unsupported consumer-group behavior.
  • Review operational fit by testing security, replication, observability, failure handling and administration in the intended VAST deployment; the launch performance claims do not answer these questions.
  • Model the whole deployment before comparing costs. The announcement and cited performance claims do not provide a procurement or pricing model.

What to conclude from the launch

VAST’s 2025 announcements describe a unified data platform that adds block storage and a native, Kafka-compatible event broker integrated with its data and compute services. Event Broker may reduce the need for a separate streaming layer in some VAST-centered architectures, but it should not be treated as a universal Kafka replacement. Compatibility limits, infrastructure configuration and workload-specific testing determine whether it fits a particular organization.
