Peppermint Grove Has a High Share of Part-Time Workers, Census Data Shows

The 2021 Census recorded a 41.1% part-time work share in Peppermint Grove—above WA and Australia—but the cited data does not establish a Perth-wide highest ranking.

In the 2021 Census, 41.1% of Peppermint Grove residents aged 15 and over who reported being in the labour force were recorded as working part-time. That was higher than the corresponding shares for Western Australia and Australia—but the available figures do not establish that Peppermint Grove had the highest share in Perth.

What the 2021 Census says about Peppermint Grove

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recorded 320 Peppermint Grove residents as working part-time in the week before the 2021 Census. They represented 41.1% of residents aged 15 and over who reported being in the labour force, according to the 2021 Peppermint Grove LGA QuickStats.

The denominator matters: 41.1% is not the share of all Peppermint Grove residents, all adults, or all people with jobs. It is the share of the specified labour-force population. The Census is a snapshot of the week before Census night, not a current employment estimate.

How Peppermint Grove compares with WA and Australia

Area and source Part-time workers Share of people aged 15+ who reported being in the labour force
Peppermint Grove LGA — ABS 2021 Census 320 41.1%
Western Australia — ABS 2021 Census Not stated in the cited QuickStats comparison 32.0%
Australia — ABS 2021 Census Not stated in the cited QuickStats comparison 31.2%

On this like-for-like comparison in the ABS table, Peppermint Grove’s share was 9.1 percentage points above WA’s and 9.9 points above Australia’s. The table provides the local part-time count and comparison percentages; it does not provide corresponding WA and national counts in the cited figures.

Does Peppermint Grove have Perth’s highest part-time share?

The cited figures do not prove that it does. They compare Peppermint Grove with WA and Australia, but do not rank every Perth local government area using the same Census year, geographic basis, labour-force definition and denominator. A claim that Peppermint Grove has “the most” part-time workers—or the highest part-time share—in Perth would require that complete comparable ranking.

Also distinguish a count from a share: a place can have a high percentage of part-time workers without having the largest number of part-time workers. The ABS figures support a high local share relative to the state and national benchmarks, not a Perth-wide maximum.

What the hours-worked figures add

The 2021 LGA QuickStats also records 166 Peppermint Grove residents working 1–19 hours and 94 working 20–29 hours. Those are hours-worked categories, not alternative totals to add to or substitute for the reported 320 part-time workers. The ABS notes that the labour-force percentage uses people aged 15 and over who reported being in the labour force; its “away from work” category includes employed people who reported zero hours or did not state their hours.

What the 2016 figures can—and cannot—show

The ABS’s 2016 Peppermint Grove QuickStats reports 299 part-time workers, or 41.8%, alongside WA at 30.0% and Australia at 30.4%. This offers historical context: the reported local share was 0.7 percentage points lower in 2021 than in 2016. However, the retrieved 2016 and 2021 pages use different geographic identifiers, so this comparison alone is not enough to establish a precise employment trend.

The ABS also publishes a separate 2021 Peppermint Grove suburb/locality QuickStats. It reports the same 41.1% part-time share, but it is a different geographic presentation from the LGA table; comparisons should identify which geography they use.
