He joined from Walmart, where he led the U.S. Omni Platforms and Tech organization. As of August 18, 2026, PayPal’s executive-leadership page still lists him as CTO.
What PayPal announced
The appointment put Venkatesan in charge of technology across PayPal’s ecosystem, not only artificial intelligence. In the 2024 announcement, PayPal said he would report to then-President and CEO Alex Chriss. That was the reporting structure announced at the time, not a statement about his current reporting line. PayPal’s announcement also said incumbent CTO Archie Deskus would help with the transition before leaving the company in July 2024.

What he led at Walmart
Venkatesan’s Walmart organization built platforms, features, and capabilities supporting Walmart globally, according to PayPal. Reuters, in a report republished by Investing.com, said the organization numbered approximately 14,000 people and supported parts of Walmart’s digital retail ecosystem, including elements of Walmart+. That team-size figure is Reuters’ reporting, not a number in PayPal’s appointment announcement. He was not identified as Walmart’s corporate CTO; PayPal described his role as leading U.S. Omni Platforms and Tech.
This background offered experience with large-scale retail technology and digital shopping. It is relevant to PayPal’s commerce ambitions, but retail platforms are not the same as payment processing, fraud prevention, financial risk, or regulated financial infrastructure.
What the PayPal CTO role covers
PayPal’s 2024 announcement listed a broad set of responsibilities:
- Analytics and data science
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning
- Information security
- Infrastructure operations
- Product engineering
The later executive biography describes technology development and implementation across the PayPal ecosystem and includes employee and infrastructure operations. Together, those descriptions make the post a company-wide technology leadership role, with AI as one part of a much wider remit.

The timing connected the hire to a wider product and technology reset under Chriss, who became CEO in September 2023. PayPal had announced AI-oriented products earlier in 2024, including a platform intended to help merchants reach new customers based on prior shopping behavior, Reuters reported. Reuters characterized Venkatesan’s recruitment as part of PayPal’s AI push.
The strategic logic was to bring experience in large-scale digital retail, shopping, and personalization to a payments company seeking to build a more integrated technology platform and broaden its commerce capabilities. In PayPal’s announcement, Chriss pointed to Venkatesan’s experience scaling technology organizations, digital transformation, and AI personalization. Venkatesan said his work helping customers discover, shop for, and buy products would inform efforts to personalize shopping experiences. Those were company statements about the rationale for the hire, not evidence that the strategy had already delivered results.
The announcement did not set measurable AI targets or delivery milestones, nor does the appointment alone establish that PayPal’s AI strategy improved revenue, productivity, or customer outcomes. A large technology organization and relevant retail experience may help with execution; they do not remove challenges involving adoption, security, regulation, or monetization.

As of August 18, 2026, PayPal’s executive-leadership page lists Venkatesan as chief technology officer and describes his remit as technology development and implementation across the PayPal ecosystem. The leadership context has changed since his appointment: PayPal says Enrique Lores became president and CEO effective March 1, 2026. The 2024 announcement’s reference to Chriss should therefore be read as historical, not as confirmation of the current reporting line. See PayPal’s newsroom announcements for the CEO change.
