Pakistan had 82 institutions represented in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026, according to the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST). NUST reported the country’s highest placement: 68th in Asia and third in Southern Asia. QS released the 2026 edition on 4 November 2025; a later correction added Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIK Institute) at joint 260th.

Pakistan’s leading result in QS Asia 2026

NUST said it ranked 68th in Asia and third in Southern Asia in the 2026 edition. It had placed sixth in Southern Asia the year before. QS’s Southern Asia page also identifies NUST as the highest-ranked institution in that subregion outside India. These are two different ranking scopes: the 68th position is the Asia-wide rank, while third is the Southern Asia subregional position.

QS published the 2026 Asia results on 4 November 2025. The edition covered 1,526 universities across 25 locations, according to QS’s results analysis. QS describes the regional series as an annual ranking, published since 2009.

How many Pakistani universities were included?

NUST’s 2025 announcement reported 82 Pakistani institutions in the QS Asia 2026 ranking. That count is attributable to NUST’s announcement, rather than the QS release article. The available results information does not establish a complete list and rank order for all Pakistani institutions, so the figure should not be treated as a list of every institution or as confirmation that all had a publicly visible row on release day.

GIK Institute’s post-release correction

QS’s correction log records GIK Institute at joint 260th after a data correction dated 25 November 2025—21 days after the results were published. This is a post-publication update, not a release-day placement. The correction is documented in the QS Asia 2026 release summary and correction log.

What does the QS Asia ranking measure?

QS uses 11 indicators spanning reputation surveys, staffing, research and internationalisation. Academic reputation and employer reputation together account for half of the total weighting. The weights listed in QS’s Asia ranking methodology are:

Indicator Weight
Academic reputation 30%
Employer reputation 20%
Faculty/student ratio 10%
International research network 10%
Citations per paper 10%
Papers per faculty 5%
Staff with PhD 5%
International faculty 2.5%
International students 2.5%
Inbound exchange students 2.5%
Outbound exchange students 2.5%

The weights show what this framework emphasises; they do not make the overall position a direct measure of every student’s classroom experience, likely admission, or the value of a particular degree. The result is one way to compare institutions, not a prediction of an individual’s educational or career outcome.

How applicants can use the ranking

Use the Asia-wide position as a starting point, then compare the specific program and practical costs that matter to you. A university’s overall regional rank cannot answer whether a course fits your goals or budget.

  • Program and subject: Check the curriculum and the strength of the particular subject or department you plan to study.
  • Accreditation: Confirm that the program meets the relevant professional or regulatory requirements for your intended path.
  • Total cost and aid: Compare tuition, living expenses, and available financial support.
  • Location and support: Consider travel, campus setting, student services, and the support available to students.
  • Outcomes: Look for information about graduate pathways and employment relevant to your field.

Those checks help answer personal questions that a university-wide ranking is not designed to settle.
