It does not, on the available evidence, establish a matching cancellation for OneDrive for Business. Today, standard business plans generally provide 1 TB per user; certain enterprise and education licenses can qualify for more under specific conditions.
What Microsoft announced in 2014
On June 23, 2014, Microsoft announced 15 GB of free OneDrive storage and 1 TB for Office 365 subscribers. Microsoft’s announcement described a large increase, but not unlimited storage.

On October 27, 2014, Microsoft announced unlimited OneDrive storage for Office 365 consumer subscribers. It also said unlimited storage for OneDrive for Business would be added to the Office 365 roadmap, with a rollout to First Release customers planned for 2015. That was a future rollout commitment, not proof that every business tenant immediately received an unconditional unlimited quota. Microsoft’s October announcement
What changed in November 2015
The widely reported reversal applied to consumer accounts: Office 365 Home, Personal, and University subscribers were moved from unlimited OneDrive storage to 1 TB, while free storage was reduced from 15 GB to 5 GB. Microsoft also planned to replace new 100 GB and 200 GB standalone plans with a 50 GB plan priced at $1.99 per month. Contemporary coverage said users already storing more than 1 TB would receive at least 12 months to remain above the new limit. Those figures and transition terms describe the 2015 consumer change, not current plan terms. Contemporary coverage of the announcement

Did OneDrive for Business lose unlimited storage?
- Confirmed: Microsoft announced a planned OneDrive for Business unlimited-storage rollout in 2014.
- Confirmed: Current standard OneDrive for Business quotas are license-based and are not generally unlimited.
- Not established by the cited 2015 reporting: A business cancellation matching the consumer rollback announced that year. It would be misleading to describe that consumer announcement as proof that business customers lost the same entitlement at the same time.
Some enterprise plan material uses “unlimited OneDrive storage” language while also describing an initial allocation of up to 5 TB per user, based on the tenant’s default quota. That should not be read as an unconditional, instantly available unlimited bucket; the applicable license, tenant capacity, and process for requesting more matter. Microsoft’s enterprise plan comparison
A separate issue is the reported 2026 phaseout of sales of standalone OneDrive for Business and SharePoint plans to new customers. TechRadar reported that new-customer sales were expected to end in June 2026 and that buyers would be directed toward Microsoft 365 business or enterprise plans. This is a distinct commercial change, not evidence of the 2015 consumer rollback. TechRadar’s report

What “up to 5 TB” means
For eligible E3 and E5 users, 5 TB is a possible configured quota, not necessarily the automatic starting amount. Administrators may need to request or assign an increase, and tenant-level pooled storage remains relevant. A quota can also be adjusted if the user’s license changes or is removed. Check the user’s assigned quota and active license rather than relying on a plan name or old account setting. Microsoft’s quota and overage FAQ
Education and other capacity exceptions
Education rules differ from commercial business plans. Microsoft’s quota FAQ says certain A3 and A5 licenses have a 5 TB OneDrive limit, potentially extendable to 25 TB where extended allocation applies. Enterprise and government customers with larger requirements should confirm their entitlement with Microsoft or their licensing representative. Additional storage options are also available subject to prerequisites and billing. Microsoft’s additional storage guidance

Choose storage based on what the data is for
OneDrive is a user’s individual work-file space. For files owned by a team or department, SharePoint generally offers a more appropriate shared ownership model. Backups, long-term archives, large media libraries, and bulk datasets may call for dedicated storage or backup services rather than an employee’s synchronized OneDrive.

- Personal work files under 1 TB per user: Business Basic, Standard, or Premium may meet the standard storage need. Microsoft’s U.S. business page showed Business Basic at $7 per user per month when paid yearly; that is a dated U.S. price signal, not an unlimited-storage offer, and prices vary by region and billing terms. Checks before buying or migrating
- Confirm whether the data is personal work content, team-owned material, or backup/archive data.
- Verify each user’s license, assigned quota, tenant capacity, and any administrator-approved increase.
- Ask what happens to quota and access if a license is changed or an employee leaves.
- For large libraries, assess synchronization load, endpoint disk space, bandwidth, indexing, retention, and restore needs.
- Plan a migration by checking bulk-transfer limits, metadata preservation, permissions, sharing links, and recovery options.
- Do not treat sync or version history as a complete independent backup or records-retention strategy.
