The shopping features could help users compare offers, but neither a useful price record nor cashback was guaranteed: both depended on supported pages, available data and, for rebates, account setup and offer terms.
What Edge 91 added
Edge 91 was a major Microsoft Edge update announced on May 27, 2021. Microsoft presented it as part of its browser updates, with shopping assistance as the most prominent addition and performance and personalization changes alongside it. The details below describe the launch-era release; they should not be read as confirmation that Edge 91’s interface, retailer counts or rebate arrangements are unchanged today. Microsoft’s announcement and contemporary coverage from Thurrott outlined the feature set.

How Edge 91’s shopping tools worked
Price history
On supported product pages, Edge could show historical online prices so shoppers could judge whether a current offer looked worth taking or whether waiting might make sense. In the Edge 91 interface, the entry point was the blue shopping tag in the address bar. Price history complemented Edge’s existing shopping assistance, including coupons and price comparison.

A chart was only as useful as the underlying match and data. Microsoft’s launch announcement did not specify how long records were retained, how often prices were refreshed or how broadly products and retailers were covered. A record might be missing, or it might not match the exact color, capacity, bundle, seller or condition in the listing. It also should not be treated as an audit of every available price: shipping, taxes, membership discounts and coupon codes can change the amount a shopper ultimately pays. Price history showed trends; the announcement did not promise automatic price-drop alerts or that a past low would return.

The blue shopping tag
The tag served as a central way to open shopping information when Edge recognized a supported retail page. Depending on the page and available information, it could surface price history, coupons, comparisons or rebates. It was not expected to appear on every product page, and seeing a retailer’s site did not mean every listing or offer was eligible. Microsoft’s later Edge policy documentation describes shopping features such as price comparisons, coupons, rebates and express checkout, but that later documentation does not establish that every behavior or interface remains as it was in Edge 91.
Bing Rebates: setup, routes and eligibility
Bing Rebates connected Edge shopping to Microsoft’s cashback program. At launch, Microsoft said shoppers could earn cashback at more than 1,200 retailers through Bing.com or shop directly at more than 300 participating retailers through Edge. These were Microsoft’s May 2021 retailer counts, not guaranteed current totals. The two routes meant users did not have to switch to Bing for every purchase, but using Edge alone did not automatically earn cashback.

- Enable Bing Rebates.
- Shop through Bing.com or visit a participating retailer directly in Edge.
- On an eligible shopping page, select the blue tag to view available rebate information and review the offer’s terms before purchasing.
A displayed rebate was an offer, not a guaranteed payout. Retailer participation and terms could vary; activation or tracking conditions, excluded items, returns, cancellations and coupon use could affect eligibility or the amount credited. Cashback might not appear immediately. Rates and offers could change, and some promotions or retailers could be geographically limited. Check the terms attached to the offer rather than assuming that every purchase qualifies. Microsoft’s announcement does not provide a complete, durable retailer list that can be treated as current.

Sleeping Tabs put inactive browser tabs into a lower-resource state, which could help people who kept many tabs open. For Edge 91, Microsoft said it improved the feature by putting advertisements to sleep immediately when background tabs entered that state and by adding internal optimizations.

Microsoft reported up to 82% memory savings in internal data from preview builds. That is Microsoft’s maximum claim under its testing conditions, not an independently reproduced benchmark or a typical result promised for every computer, tab set or workload. Sleeping tabs can also require a page to reload when reopened, and background audio, messaging, webmail or live dashboards may behave differently depending on site activity and the browser’s sleeping-tab rules.

Edge 91 added 10 built-in color themes, selectable under Settings → Appearance. Microsoft said they changed the browser frame and New Tab page; these built-in options were separate from themes available through the Microsoft Add-ons store.

The New Tab page also gained a Personalize control for choosing topics that shaped its news and headlines, with examples including business, cooking, art and space. This adjusted the informational feed; it did not change the browser’s search engine or browsing history.
Convenience, privacy and alternatives
Built-in shopping assistance reduces friction: when it recognizes a page and has relevant data, information appears in the browser rather than requiring a separate extension. That convenience comes with limits in coverage and transparency, and rebate participation adds a Microsoft Rewards account relationship. Shopping features involve information about pages, products, prices and offers; cashback can also associate eligible shopping activity with an account and transaction tracking. People who would rather not share shopping-related activity may prefer to leave these features unused.
Different tools address different needs. Dedicated cashback services may offer merchant discovery or account dashboards, while separate price trackers may provide alerts or longer histories; retailer price-match policies can matter after purchase. Those categories are not direct proof that one service is better than another. Compare current terms, product matching, data practices and coverage for the specific retailer and item you care about.
What Edge 91 did not promise
- The lowest available price or a guarantee that a historical low would return.
- A useful history, coupon, comparison or rebate on every product page or at every retailer.
- Cashback simply for using Edge, or a payout merely because an offer appeared.
- An independently verified 82% memory reduction for ordinary users.
- That launch-era retailer counts, controls or rebate terms still apply today.
Why the update mattered
Edge 91 paired browser features with Microsoft’s Bing and Rewards services: shopping discovery and cashback were integrated into the browsing experience, while Sleeping Tabs and personalization broadened the update beyond shopping. Its practical value depended on supported pages and offers, and its performance headline remained a Microsoft-attributed preview-build claim rather than a universal result.
