Eligible graduates of North Metropolitan TAFE’s Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care were offered a direct pathway to Edith Cowan University’s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies), with up to five units of credit and the possibility of reducing study by up to six months. Those are maximums, not a guaranteed credit award or time saving for every student.
Which TAFE qualification and ECU degree are involved?
The pathway announced in 2024 connects the North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE) Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care with ECU’s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies). ECU described it as an option for eligible graduates, rather than an automatic transfer for everyone who completes the diploma. ECU’s UpdatED Magazine, Edition 2, 2024, republished the announcement from ECU Newsroom; PerthNow reported it on 25 April 2024.
How much credit and time could the pathway save?
ECU and NMTAFE announced that eligible graduates could receive up to five units of credit. ECU said this could reduce university study by up to six months. Both figures describe the maximum potential benefit in the 2024 announcement; they do not establish what credit an individual applicant will receive or how long that person will need to finish the degree.
The announcement does not give a student-by-student credit assessment, detailed eligibility rules, or a guaranteed remaining study duration. Ask ECU to assess your qualification and confirm the credit it would grant before comparing course length or planning finances around a shorter degree.

What units and study progression did ECU describe?
The announcement said eligible students could enrol in a range of Early Childhood Studies units. It also said that, for the first time in 2025, NMTAFE graduates would be able to enrol in ECU’s unit Wellbeing for Early Childhood Educators and Children. This is a detail reported for the announced pathway and 2025; the sources do not confirm whether the unit or pathway arrangements remain the same in 2026.
ECU framed the partnership as a response to the need for more early childhood educators in Western Australia and for educators with higher-level learning and advanced experience. NMTAFE General Manager Training Services Darren Channell described the partnership as a progression opportunity beyond completing a course and obtaining an initial job, noting that early childhood workers require an education focus as well as a care focus.

What should a 2026 applicant verify?
The announcement establishes what ECU and NMTAFE said in 2024; it does not verify that the pathway, credit rules, course structure, admission deadlines, fees, or unit availability remain unchanged in October 2026. Before applying, confirm current details directly with both providers:
- Whether the pathway is still available and which NMTAFE diploma graduates are eligible.
- How ECU assesses prior study and how many units of credit it would grant in your case.
- Which units remain after credit and the resulting course duration and study sequence.
- Whether the degree and relevant units are currently offered, along with application deadlines and fees.
For a useful comparison with another study route, use the credit and remaining course plan ECU confirms for you—not the announcement’s maximum credit or possible time reduction.
