What makes a survey opportunity worth more?
A useful comparison starts with the reward for the time you actually spend, alongside eligibility and the kind of task involved. A study’s stated hourly rate is not the same as a promise of regular work or monthly earnings: availability changes with research demand, and not every participant will qualify for every study.
- Reward and time: Consider the displayed payment alongside the estimated duration, then account for actual completion time where the platform provides it.
- Task effort: A brief survey and a more involved research task can require different amounts of attention. Do not assume every task on a platform pays at the same rate.
- Eligibility and location: Check current participant requirements before relying on a platform. The official information cited here does not establish a complete country-by-country eligibility list.
- Payment arrangements: Verify current cash-out methods and processing rules directly with each platform before signing up.
Prolific: published minimum and recommended rates
Prolific says researchers must set a reward rate of at least £6/$8 per hour, and recommends at least £9/$12 per hour. These are platform rules and guidance for study reward rates—not estimates of what an individual participant will earn over a month. Prolific says participants can view reward-rate information in study details, including actual median completion time as participants begin taking a study. That can help you judge the time-reward trade-off more realistically than relying on an advertised duration alone. The rate and completion-time information apply to the study; they do not establish how many studies you will be offered.

How to compare an individual study
- Read the study details before accepting. Note the displayed reward, estimated time, and any eligibility requirements.
- Compare reward with time. Treat an hourly rate as a way to compare a study’s payment with its duration, not as a projection of ongoing income.
- Use actual timing when available. On Prolific, study details can include actual median completion-time information as participants begin taking the study; use it alongside the reward.
- Keep track of unpaid effort. Record time spent on screeners as well as completed tasks. A study’s displayed reward does not capture every minute you spend looking for or qualifying for work.
- Check eligibility and payment terms. Confirm that you meet the platform’s current requirements and understand its cash-out methods and processing rules before investing time.
Why better rates do not mean steady income
Study supply depends on demand and participant eligibility. Prolific notes that participant availability and study demand change; the platform’s published rates do not establish a guaranteed number of studies or total earnings for any individual. See Prolific’s participant help.
For that reason, treat research platforms as sources of occasional opportunities rather than dependable income unless your own experience supports a different expectation. Judge each study by its specific reward, effort, and terms, and avoid planning around a generalized earnings claim.
