There is no single Russian “Amazon” in the figures available: domestic marketplaces Wildberries and Ozon lead local online retail, while Alibaba-owned AliExpress is better understood as a cross-border competitor. Whether a platform is “on top” depends on whether you count orders, sales value or gross merchandise value (GMV), and whether the comparison includes local operations or imports.
How large is Russian online retail?
Russia’s online retail market continued to expand in 2025. Data Insight reported 13.4 trillion rubles in online sales, up 19% from 2024, and 8.3 billion orders, up 24%. The average order value was 1,610 rubles, down 5% year over year. These national figures describe the whole online retail market, not AliExpress alone. Data Insight’s 2026 report also estimates that marketplaces handled 81% of Russian online orders and 62% of online sales in 2025.

Those percentages use different denominators: an order share counts transactions, while a sales share measures value. Neither should be treated as interchangeable with GMV estimates from another report.
Which marketplaces lead the domestic market?

The figures cover the second half of 2024 and are from Data Insight’s 2025 report. They are not full-year 2025 shares, nor are they GMV shares. On these measures, AliExpress was not close to the two domestic leaders.
Why another report gives different percentages
A September 2025 Index1520 report estimated 2024 Russian e-commerce marketplace GMV shares at 47% for Wildberries, 35% for Ozon, 10% for Yandex.Market, 5% for MegaMarket and 3% for others. The report’s authors compiled the estimates from company annual reports. GMV is a value-based measure, so these percentages should be read separately from Data Insight’s second-half order shares and sales-volume figures. They do not describe the same metric and period.

Where AliExpress fits in Russia
AliExpress is Alibaba’s cross-border marketplace, but its Russian position is not directly comparable to a locally operated marketplace. RBC reported that AliExpress fell out of INFOLine’s ranking of Russia’s largest online sellers by 2024 results because that ranking covered operators active in the local market; AliExpress had wound down its local operations in 2023 and remained focused on cross-border sales. INFOLine’s CEO, Mikhail Burmistrov, estimated AliExpress’s Russian turnover at about 200 billion rubles in 2024. RBC’s report presents that as an estimate, not a platform-reported market share.
Retail.ru’s account of INFOLine’s analysis estimated that cross-border trade contracted 21% to 250 billion rubles in 2024. The report cited several explanations: the duty-free import threshold was lowered from €1,000 to €200 in spring 2024, currency effects, and Russian sellers sourcing popular Chinese goods and reselling them through Wildberries and Ozon. These are explanations reported by the source, not a quantified finding that assigns a precise share of the decline to each factor. Retail.ru’s report provides the cross-border estimate and context.

Why the local-versus-cross-border distinction matters
- A local marketplace ranking measures businesses operating in the Russian domestic market under that ranking’s rules.
- A cross-border platform connects Russian buyers with overseas sellers and faces different logistics, customs and competitive conditions.
- Russian marketplaces can compete with AliExpress for goods from China while also hosting Russian sellers who import and resell those goods.
As a result, AliExpress can remain a meaningful channel for Russian shoppers without being the leader in the domestic marketplace rankings cited here.
What “top e-commerce spot” means
For a useful comparison, check four things before reading a percentage as market share:

- Metric: Does it count orders, sales value or GMV?
- Period: Is it a half-year, a calendar year or a later estimate of an earlier year?
- Geography and channel: Does it cover Russian local operations, cross-border purchases or both?
- Ranking scope: Does it include only businesses with local-market operations?
Under Data Insight’s 2024 platform measures, Wildberries led, followed by Ozon. Under Index1520’s 2024 GMV estimates, the same two platforms led, though the percentages differ because the metric and methodology differ. AliExpress belongs in the cross-border part of the story, not as a like-for-like domestic leader in those rankings.

“No Amazon in Russia” is a useful shorthand for a market with powerful local marketplaces, but it should not imply a direct one-to-one equivalent or a single winner across every measure. The available figures establish strong marketplace concentration and a clear domestic lead for Wildberries and Ozon; they do not establish that AliExpress has taken Russia’s top online-retail position. AliExpress instead competes in cross-border sales, a segment that faced a reported contraction in 2024.

Data Insight quotes Alexander Maslyak, founder and CEO of INDEEPA, describing Russian e-commerce as “a young market with a mature approach and a unique style,” and advising sellers to adapt global experience to local conditions. The statement appears on Data Insight’s 2026 report page; it captures why overseas platforms and domestic marketplaces may operate in the same market without playing identical roles.
