McDonald’s Japan announced a Pokémon Happy Set promotion beginning August 9, 2024, at participating locations across Japan, with some stores excluded. The limited-time offer featured eight outdoor-play toys in two waves and a separate Pokémon Frienda Pick giveaway on August 17–18. It was a Japan promotion, not a U.S. Happy Meal release.
When and where was the Pokémon Happy Set available?
McDonald’s Japan published its announcement on August 2, 2024, and scheduled the Happy Set “Pokémon” to begin Friday, August 9, at participating locations nationwide. The offer was limited time, but the announcement gave no fixed end date or store-by-store inventory details. McDonald’s Japan’s announcement is the primary source for the promotion’s dates and terms.

What toys were included?
The eight toys were divided into two waves of four. McDonald’s Japan described the lineup as centered on outdoor play, with some toys also suited to bath, pool, or indoor play. The release names these activities and functions; they are the company’s descriptions, not independent product testing.
| Wave | Toys named in the announcement | Described play or function |
|---|---|---|
| First wave | Captain Pikachu waterwheel; Poké Ball watering can; Sprigatito shovel-and-scoop kit; Fuecoco flying disc | Water movement and watering; digging or making patterns in sand or clay; flying-disc play in an open area |
| Second wave | Quaxly water gun; Sprigatito telescope; Captain Pikachu roller; Poké Ball compass | Spraying water; viewing distant objects; making patterns; finding direction |
The company said the toys were developed around themes intended to encourage children’s interest and exploration, with input from child development specialists. That describes McDonald’s stated approach; the announcement does not report measured developmental outcomes.

What was the weekend giveaway?
On August 17 and 18, 2024, customers who bought one Pokémon Happy Set were offered one McDonald’s-original Pokémon Frienda Pick, while supplies lasted. McDonald’s Japan said there were six designs. The announcement does not establish how many were available at each restaurant or whether any location ran out early.

The Japan promotion was an eight-toy Happy Set offer in August 2024. McDonald’s USA announced a different Pokémon Happy Meal beginning January 21, 2025, which included a Pokémon Trading Card Game booster pack, poster, and sticker sheet. Those U.S. items and dates belong to a separate campaign and should not be treated as part of the 2024 Japan set. McDonald’s USA’s announcement covers the later U.S. promotion.
