Nintendo’s dedicated video game business generated an estimated $59.8 billion in revenue from March 2017 through December 2021, according to TweakTown. That is not a Switch-only total: the estimate includes 3DS hardware and software, although TweakTown says most of the earnings came from Switch.
What the nearly $60 billion figure measures
TweakTown’s March 2022 retrospective attributes $59.8 billion in revenue to Nintendo’s dedicated video game business over the period from March 2017 to December 2021. The period began around the Switch’s launch, but the total covers more than that console: TweakTown explicitly includes 3DS hardware and software. It should therefore be described as an estimate for Nintendo’s broader dedicated video game business, not audited revenue generated by Switch alone. TweakTown’s five-year retrospective says most of the earnings came from Switch.
How the estimate breaks down
A separate TweakTown article attributes $33.16 billion, or 55% of the total, to hardware and $26.63 billion, or 45%, to software. Those figures use the same broader-business scope; they are not a Switch-only hardware and software split.
| Category | TweakTown estimate | Share reported |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | $33.16 billion | 55% |
| Software | $26.63 billion | 45% |
TweakTown says it converted yen using Nintendo’s historical exchange rates. The article does not provide a full calculation table, so the dollar totals cannot be independently reconstructed from its published figures alone. Treat them as the publication’s estimates, rather than company-reported audited totals. TweakTown’s hardware and software estimate gives the breakdown.

What Nintendo reported separately for FY2022
Nintendo’s own results offer a useful but different snapshot. For its fiscal year ended March 31, 2022—April 2021 through March 2022—the company reported sales of 23.06 million Switch hardware units and 235.07 million software units. Nintendo said the software figure was the highest annual software sales total then recorded for a Nintendo platform. It also attributed a 20.0% year-on-year decline in hardware sales to semiconductor and other parts shortages.
These are unit sales for one fiscal year, not dollar revenue for the March 2017–December 2021 period in TweakTown’s estimate. They should not be added to, or presented as verification of, the five-year revenue figure.

Digital sales are another distinct measure
Nintendo reported 359.6 billion yen in digital sales for its dedicated video game platform business in FY2022, up 4.5% year on year. The category includes downloadable versions of packaged games, download-only software, add-on content, and Nintendo Switch Online. It is a fiscal-year digital-sales figure, not a dollar amount for Switch alone. Nintendo’s FY2022 financial results define the Switch platform as hardware, software—including digital formats and online service—and accessories.

The headline’s “nearly $60 billion” is best understood as an estimate of the revenue of Nintendo’s dedicated video game business during the first five years after Switch launched, with the company’s 3DS business included. Switch was the main contributor according to TweakTown, but the available figures do not establish how much of the $59.8 billion came from Switch by itself. The period, scope, and currency-conversion basis matter when comparing this estimate with Nintendo’s fiscal-year reporting or with another company’s console revenue.
