Nintendo postponed the planned April 9, 2025, Switch 2 preorder start in the United States while it assessed potential tariff effects and changing market conditions. Canada’s planned April 9 start was delayed as well. Nintendo later set retail preorders for April 24 in both countries, while keeping the June 5, 2025, launch date unchanged.
Why Nintendo delayed Switch 2 pre-orders
Nintendo’s April 4, 2025, U.S. statement said preorders would not begin on the previously announced April 9 date. The company said it needed time “to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” as reported by MobileSyrup. Nintendo did not provide a dollar estimate for any tariff impact or say how many consoles or customers might be affected.

At first, Canada’s April 9 preorder plan remained in place. On April 8, Nintendo of Canada confirmed to MobileSyrup that its start would also be delayed to align with the United States. The April 2 product presentation had announced June 5 as the launch date; Nintendo said that date would not change.
When did pre-orders start in the U.S. and Canada?
On April 18, Nintendo announced that retail preorders would begin April 24, 2025, in both countries. The company’s U.S. announcement and Canadian announcement both retained June 5, 2025, as the launch date. Nintendo’s U.S. notice apologized for the retail preorder delay and said it hoped the update would reduce customer uncertainty.

What Nintendo said about launch prices
The April 18 announcements preserved the console and bundle prices announced April 2. In the United States, Nintendo said prices for the console, bundle, and games would remain as announced, while accessory prices would be adjusted because of changing market conditions. The figures below are historical launch MSRPs listed in Nintendo’s announcements on April 18, 2025—not current prices.
| Product | United States (USD) | Canada (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 console | $449.99 | C$629.99 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | C$699.99 |

Nintendo specifically described U.S. accessory prices as adjusted. Its Canadian announcement listed accessory prices but did not say they had been adjusted, so the two countries’ notices should not be read as making the same claim.

What the delay did—and did not—mean
The delay changed the retail preorder date, not the announced launch date. Nintendo’s explanation tied the U.S. postponement to assessing possible tariff effects and evolving market conditions; it did not say tariffs had caused a specific price increase or quantify a cost to the company. The April 18 notices kept the console and bundle prices at their previously announced levels and set the new preorder date.
These dates and prices describe the 2025 announcements. They do not establish current retailer stock, availability, or pricing.
