In June 2025, Niko later reported that China player spending on video games reached $49.2 billion in 2024—but the two figures use descriptions that do not establish identical market coverage or accounting definitions.
What did Niko Partners forecast in 2020?
Niko Partners’ May 6, 2020 announcement put China’s combined PC and mobile game revenue at $33.1 billion in 2019 and projected it would pass $46.7 billion by 2024. The announcement described a five-year forecast model revised in response to COVID-19, regulation and other market factors—not a prediction based on the pandemic alone. Niko Partners’ announcement
The release estimated 685 million gamers in China in 2019 and forecast 772 million by 2024. Those player counts were also estimates and forecasts, respectively.
How did the forecast break down by platform?

These figures are the values Niko reported or projected in its 2020 release; the esports-related measure is presented separately from the platform revenue breakdown and should not be added to it as though it were a distinct platform.

How did Niko account for COVID-19?
Niko said its revised outlook reflected several influences. It cited internet-cafe disruption and title-licensing delays as pressures on PC gaming, while stronger mobile demand supported a higher mobile outlook. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous coverage of the forecast likewise described the expected PC decline and improved mobile outlook.
Niko’s announcement also reported that 95% of respondents in its China COVID-19 impact survey said quarantine led them to play more. That is a result for respondents to Niko’s survey, not a finding about every Chinese gamer.

For its market analysis, Niko said it considered online surveys of Chinese gamers, market and game trends, leading titles and company shares, policy and regulation, publisher interviews, growth drivers, and distribution, hardware, payments and internet cafes. These were inputs to its analysis, not a guarantee that any one factor would determine the market’s eventual size.

The $49.2 billion figure is later reporting; it should not be treated as proof that the 2020 forecast was exactly on target. The earlier release explicitly forecast PC and mobile game revenue, while the later one describes player spending on video games. The available descriptions do not show whether the measures cover the same segments or use the same accounting rules.
