Those figures describe different periods: the revenue increase is for the full first half of fiscal 2026, not a standalone Q2 comparison, and the console figure is Nintendo’s sell-in measure.
What Nintendo reported—and which period each figure covers
Nintendo announced its FY2026 first-half results on November 4, 2025. Its consolidated net sales for the six months ended September 30, 2025, were ¥1,099.565 billion, up 110.1% year on year. The release does not present that 110.1% increase as a standalone second-quarter revenue comparison. Nintendo’s six-month consolidated results give the period and figures.

The company’s dedicated video game platform business recorded ¥1,066.1 billion in first-half sales, up 119.7% year on year. That category is distinct from consolidated net sales. Nintendo’s FY2026 second-quarter explanatory material attributes the platform-business increase to the Switch 2 launch and the new system’s higher individual unit price.
What “4.54 million sold” means
Nintendo reported 4.54 million Switch 2 hardware units in Q2 and 10.36 million in the first half as sell-in. The company defines sell-in as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including corporate business partners and direct sales to individual consumers through Nintendo websites or downloadable software. Sell-through instead refers to sales to individual consumers, including retailer sales as well as Nintendo direct and downloadable-software sales. The terms are not interchangeable.

In its November 4, 2025 explanatory material, Nintendo said that hardware sales had declined from the high demand immediately after launch in Q1, but that Q2 performance remained strong, with 4.54 million units sold. This describes a moderation from the launch quarter, not a consumer sell-through count.
Why revenue rose while gross margin fell
The Switch 2 launch and its higher individual unit price helped lift first-half platform sales. At the same time, hardware made up a larger share of sales, and Nintendo said Switch 2 had a lower margin than the original Switch. Gross profit margin fell 24.6 percentage points to 36.2% in the first half. Revenue growth therefore did not mean that the business earned a larger gross-profit percentage on each yen of sales.

Hardware units and software units are not revenue equivalents
Nintendo reported 20.62 million Switch 2 software units in the first half, including approximately 8.10 million units bundled with the console. Mario Kart World reached 9.57 million units and Donkey Kong Bananza 3.49 million; Mario Kart World’s figure includes bundle sales. Nintendo counts bundled software in software-unit totals, but classifies revenue from software bundled with hardware as hardware revenue. The unit count should not be read as a standalone software-revenue figure.
Forecasts raised, not final sales results
Alongside its first-half results, Nintendo raised its FY2026 forecast for Switch 2 hardware from 15 million to 19 million units and its software forecast from 45 million to 48 million units. These were forecasts for the fiscal year, not final reported totals. Actual sales should not be inferred from the revised targets.

How the later results change the context
The headline figures are historical. As of October 8, 2026, Nintendo’s latest reported quarter was FY2027 Q1, the three months ended June 30, 2026. In that quarter, net sales were ¥517.813 billion, down 9.5% year on year, while operating profit rose 150.5% to ¥142.596 billion and net profit attributable to owners rose 53.5% to ¥147.423 billion. The year-on-year comparison is against FY2026 Q1, the Switch 2 launch quarter.
Nintendo reported 3.82 million Switch 2 hardware sell-in units in FY2027 Q1, down 34.4% year on year, and 0.66 million original Switch hardware units. Software sales were 9.46 million Switch 2 units and 33.81 million original Switch units. The company attributed the operating-profit increase in part to a greater proportion of software sales and refunds of U.S. IEEPA tariffs recorded as a reduction in cost of sales. The results show why console unit growth alone does not determine quarterly profit.
Nintendo’s investor-relations schedule listed its next six-month earnings release for November 5, 2026; as of October 8, 2026, FY2027 Q2 results had not yet been reported. See Nintendo’s investor relations page for its schedule and filings.
