Nintendo delayed U.S. Switch 2 preorders in April 2025 while it assessed potential tariffs and changing market conditions. The delay did not push back the console’s June 5, 2025 launch. Nintendo’s current U.S. standalone MSRP is $499.99 before tax, effective September 1, 2026; the $449.99 price announced for launch is historical, not today’s MSRP.
Why were Switch 2 preorders delayed?
Nintendo had initially planned to open U.S. preorders on April 9, 2025. On April 4, the company said preorders would not begin that day “in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” according to a statement Nintendo provided to media and reported by Axios.

The announcement identified tariffs as a potential factor, but did not quantify their effect on the console’s costs or say how much any tariff contributed to a price change. Nintendo later cited changing market conditions when it announced adjustments to accessory prices; it did not assign a specific tariff amount to individual accessories.
When did U.S. preorders start, and did the launch move?
Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 U.S. update set retail preorders for April 24 and apologized for the delay. The console’s launch date remained June 5, 2025. The delay changed when customers could place retail orders, not when the system was scheduled to launch. Nintendo’s announcement is available on its U.S. website.

How much does a Switch 2 cost now?
Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation lists a U.S. standalone Nintendo Switch 2 MSRP of $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, up from its $449.99 launch MSRP. Nintendo says U.S. prices exclude tax. The revised MSRP is not necessarily the price at every retailer, so check the current listing and stock before buying. | Price | What it refers to | Date and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $449.99 | Standalone Switch 2 console | Nintendo of America’s U.S. launch MSRP, retained in its April 18, 2025 update; historical price, before tax. |
| $499.99 | Switch 2 console plus Mario Kart World bundle | Nintendo of America’s U.S. launch price announced in 2025; historical bundle price. |
| $499.99 | Standalone Switch 2 console | Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s revised U.S. MSRP, effective September 1, 2026; before tax. |
The two $499.99 figures refer to different things: the 2025 console-and-game bundle and the revised 2026 price for the standalone console. They should not be treated as the same offer.

What happened to accessory prices?
In its April 18, 2025 update, Nintendo said accessory prices would be adjusted due to changes in market conditions. Its listed U.S. launch MSRPs included $84.99 for the Switch 2 Pro Controller, $39.99 for the Carrying Case & Screen Protector, and $59.99 for Samsung’s 256GB microSD Express card for Switch 2. Those are historical launch prices, not verified current prices. Check the current listing and confirm that any storage card is compatible with Switch 2.
