A July 2020 forum post titled “Never mix personal and business – a sordid tale” describes one user’s trouble after using the same email address for a personal Office 365 Home/Family subscription and to join a volunteer organization’s Microsoft Teams space. The user encountered a choice between a work-or-school account and a personal account at sign-in, and Outlook desktop stopped connecting. The post records an individual experience, not a confirmed Microsoft diagnosis or a verified fix.
What happened in the 2020 post
In a Thurrott.com forum post dated July 16, 2020, user yaddamaster said their Office 365 Home/Family subscription had been working reasonably well. They used its personal email address to join a volunteer organization’s Microsoft Teams space. Outlook still worked immediately after joining, according to the post.

The next day, after rebooting, Outlook desktop would not connect. The user said they logged out and deleted the Outlook profile, but neither step resolved the problem. They also reported that Windows 10 Mail and an Android mail app continued to work.
Why the account-choice prompt mattered
At web sign-in, the user reported seeing: “It looks like this email is used with more than one account from Microsoft. Which one do you want to use?” The two choices were “Work or school account. Created by your IT department” and “Personal account”. The post describes those displayed options; it does not independently verify that the wording remains current.

The prompt suggested that the same email address was associated with separate personal and organizational sign-in contexts. But the post does not establish that joining Teams caused Outlook to fail, identify a technical cause, or confirm that the two account contexts were merged. The timing is the poster’s account of events, not a Microsoft-confirmed diagnosis.
What the poster tried—and what remains unknown
The user said they left the Teams group and then removed the volunteer organization through account settings at portal.azure.com. They continued to see the account-choice prompt, and reported that the organization no longer appeared in that portal. Outlook desktop still would not connect.

The forum post does not document what happened after the user asked for suggestions. It provides no confirmed resolution, so it cannot support a claim that removing the organization, deleting an Outlook profile, or another step fixed the problem. The portal route is part of the 2020 account and should not be treated as current troubleshooting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this story does—and does not—show
- It shows: one user reported a personal subscription, a volunteer Teams organization, a work-or-school versus personal account prompt, and Outlook desktop connection trouble in that sequence.
- It does not show: that sharing an email address between personal and organizational Microsoft accounts generally breaks Outlook, that one account type caused the failure, or that the issue has a particular fix.
- Client behavior is anecdotal: in this case, the user said Windows 10 Mail and Android mail worked while Outlook desktop did not. That is not a current or general comparison of those email clients.
For a reader looking for a solution, the most reliable takeaway is limited: this historical post records a confusing account-choice prompt and an unresolved Outlook problem, not instructions for diagnosing or repairing a current Microsoft account issue.
