The Los Angeles Times separately reported the expected 5% scale, citing a source familiar with the proposed cuts. TheWrap also reported the figure, while noting that the affected departments were unclear. These are reports about a possible plan, not a Netflix announcement or confirmation.
How many jobs could 5% represent?
The estimates differ because they use different workforce baselines. Netflix’s 2025 annual report says the company had approximately 16,000 full-time employees on December 31, 2025. Five percent of that reported total is about 800 employees. The Los Angeles Times likewise reported about 800 potential jobs, citing a source familiar with the cuts.

Puck estimated about 850 potential jobs using its estimate of roughly 17,000 employees worldwide. Neither estimate is a confirmed layoff total: the reported percentage is approximate, and the underlying headcount estimates differ in date or definition.
Netflix’s annual report also says its employee count excludes some part-time and temporary workers involved in content production, whose numbers fluctuate during the year. That definition is one reason workforce totals can vary.

Which Netflix teams could be affected?
The Los Angeles Times reported that creative teams, including employees working on features, could be affected. The report did not establish a complete list of departments, roles, or locations. No company-confirmed scope is available.
When could Netflix announce a decision?
Puck’s October 9 report said an announcement could come as early as the following week. That was a reported possibility, not a scheduled or confirmed announcement date. The reviewed reports do not establish whether Netflix will announce, change, or cancel the proposal.

How does this compare with Netflix’s 2022 layoffs?
The Los Angeles Times described the proposed cuts as potentially Netflix’s largest since 2022. It reported that Netflix cut 150 jobs in May 2022 and 300 the following month. The comparison is conditional: the reported 2026 plan has not been confirmed, and its final size is unknown.

At Bloomberg’s 2026 Screentime event, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said: “Overall we’re not growing as fast as I want us to, and we’re working on making that move faster.” The Los Angeles Times also reported that viewing hours increased about 2% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, while content spending climbed over the same broad period.

Those details provide business context, not an established explanation for the reported cuts. The cited coverage does not show that Netflix identified growth, viewing hours, or content spending as the reason for the proposed restructuring. The Times noted that Netflix says engagement can be measured in different ways, including the role live programming plays in subscription sign-ups.
