Data available at the time pointed to a cooling market after unusually strong years, with conditions varying by country, sector, and occupation. Reddit offers a vivid account of that frustration—not a representative measure of how job seekers fared.
Why the 2025 job search felt difficult
LinkedIn’s January 15, 2025 report found that 58% of people worldwide planned to look for a new job during 2025. Half said job searching had become harder over the prior year, and 37% of job seekers said they were applying to more jobs than ever but hearing back less. These are LinkedIn-reported survey findings about plans and perceptions, not a count of all job seekers or a universal account of their results. Read LinkedIn’s report.
LinkedIn Career Expert Catherine Fisher said applicants should focus on roles that match their skills and find ways to stand out. That is expert guidance in the report, not evidence from a controlled test that any particular application strategy guarantees interviews. LinkedIn also reported that 25% planned to learn new skills in 2025 and 56% were open to working in a new industry or area.
What the U.S. indicators suggested entering 2025
Indeed Hiring Lab’s December 10, 2024 U.S. outlook described a labor market that was cooling, rather than simply “dead.” Its U.S. Job Posting Index was 10% below its year-earlier level as of November 2024, but still 10% above its pre-pandemic level. Indeed also described slowing job gains alongside relatively low unemployment and layoffs. These figures refer to different indicators and reference periods; none alone captures every worker’s prospects. See Indeed Hiring Lab’s U.S. outlook.

#1 Best Overall
Indeed said postings had fallen from their 2022 peak, while hiring and quitting rates were subdued. Its forecast was that a soft landing remained possible, but not guaranteed. That was an outlook based on information available in December 2024, not proof that every prediction came true or that conditions were uniform across the country.
Job prospects depended on sector and occupation
Indeed’s outlook identified comparatively strong postings in skilled-labor sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. It also reported that posting counts in software development, marketing, and media and communications were below February 2020 levels. Those broad patterns do not guarantee a vacancy—or a lack of one—for a specific occupation, employer, or applicant.

For a useful comparison, look at the measure and its baseline: a posting index is not the same as payroll job gains, unemployment, or layoffs. A sector’s posting trend also does not tell you whether a particular role is accessible without specific credentials, experience, or location. Check current openings and requirements in the occupation and region you are actually considering.
The outlook was not the same around the world
Indeed’s January 15, 2025 global summary described the U.S. outlook as comparatively optimistic while noting weak labor demand and other pressures in some European countries. A U.S. forecast should not be treated as a global consensus. Country-level conditions differed, so job seekers comparing opportunities across borders need to check the relevant local labor market. What one Reddit post can—and cannot—tell you
On August 6, 2025, a poster in r/recruitinghell titled a post “Seriously WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE JOB MARKET?!!!” The writer described months of searching after a layoff, repeated rejections, resume revisions, and attempts to network, while asking “what is going on?” in light of claims about job growth. The post captures a recognizable mismatch: aggregate indicators can look positive while one person’s search remains painful. View the Reddit post.
It is one person’s account, not a representative sample. It cannot establish how typical that experience was, verify the author’s unemployment duration, or show that job-creation figures were wrong. Aggregate measures and individual experience answer different questions: a growing economy can still leave particular workers, fields, or places with few suitable openings.

How later BLS projections add context
In an August 28, 2025 release, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected 5.2 million additional jobs from 2024 to 2034, or 3.1% total employment growth over that decade. It projected healthcare and social assistance to grow 8.4%, making it the fastest-growing industry sector in the projection. These are long-term U.S. projections, not realized 2025 hiring results or a guarantee about a specific job seeker’s prospects. See the BLS projections.

A practical way to read job-market claims
- Check geography: Identify the country or region the indicator covers; labor demand was not uniform globally.
- Check the sector and occupation: Broad industry trends do not guarantee outcomes for a specific role or applicant.
- Check the measure and date: Postings, payroll gains, unemployment, layoffs, and decade-long projections are distinct measures. Keep each tied to its stated period and baseline.
- Separate forecasts from outcomes: A forecast describes what seemed possible at the time; it is not proof of what later happened.
- Use personal accounts as context, not statistics: Reddit can show what job-search frustration sounds like, but one post cannot measure how widespread it is.
