When Nathan Jones left Luton Town for Southampton in November 2022, Sky Sports reported that the compensation package for Jones and coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan was around £2.5 million. That was a media-reported estimate, not a sum either club publicly confirmed. Luton’s reported statement called the package “acceptable” but did not disclose an amount.
What compensation figure was reported?
On 10 November 2022, Sky Sports reported that Southampton were “understood to be paying” Luton Town around £2.5 million for Jones and assistants Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan. The wording identifies an understood figure, not an official fee published by either club. Sky Sports’ report is the source for the around-£2.5m estimate.

Why were different figures reported?
The Lutonian reported that initial reports put the package at around £4 million, before Sky Sports reported the lower figure of around £2.5 million. The Lutonian also attributed the phrase “an acceptable compensation package” to Luton Town’s statement, which did not name a sum. The Lutonian’s account does not resolve why the estimates differed or establish what was ultimately paid.
| Reported figure | Source and context | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Around £4m | The Lutonian, 10 November 2022, describing initial reports | An earlier press estimate; not a confirmed payment |
| Around £2.5m | Sky Sports, 10 November 2022, reporting what Southampton were understood to be paying for Jones and two coaches | A later reported estimate; not a club-confirmed final sum |
What did Luton and Southampton confirm?
Southampton announced Jones’s appointment on 10 November 2022 on a three-and-a-half-year contract. BBC Sport reported that Cohen and Alan Sheehan would join him. Luton’s statement, as quoted by The Lutonian, characterized the package as acceptable without specifying its value. Luton chief executive Gary Sweet said the Southampton representatives had “acted in a most professional manner since first making their approach to us, as has Nathan.” That comment concerned the conduct of the approach, not the amount of compensation. BBC Sport’s appointment report covers the move and contract.

Jones had signed a five-year contract with Luton in January 2022, according to BBC Sport. Southampton later dismissed him after 95 days in charge, as reported by BBC Sport on 12 February 2023. These timeline details provide context for the move, but they do not verify either reported compensation estimate or explain how a fee may have been calculated.

The cited reports do not establish the exact amount ultimately paid. Neither the around-£2.5m estimate nor the earlier around-£4m report should be treated as a confirmed final payment, and the available reporting does not provide a breakdown between Jones and the two coaches.
