The “big Dejphon Chansiri factor” was two connected but separate issues: his reported valuation of Sheffield Wednesday and his position as the club’s main creditor. In September 2025, BBC Sport reported that Chansiri valued the club at about £100 million, while football finance expert Kieran Maguire put it at roughly £40 million to £50 million. The eventual takeover was completed by Arise Capital Partners on 2 May 2026, so this is a look back at the impasse—not a pending sale.
Why did a finance expert question Wednesday’s valuation?
BBC Sport reported on 3 September 2025 that Chansiri had rejected two offers: one worth £40 million and another worth £30 million from a US group. His understood valuation was about £100 million. That figure was more than twice the upper end of Maguire’s estimate.
Maguire, a football finance expert, told BBC Sport that “Most EFL clubs are being sold for roughly two or two-and-a-half times their revenue.” Applying that kind of revenue multiple, he estimated Wednesday’s value at around £40 million to £50 million. He said the stadium’s condition and the fact that the club did not own it pushed the club toward the lower end of that range. He described the apparent £100 million valuation as having “no logical backing.” These were his assessment and the offers and valuation as reported at the time, not a confirmed sale price or an independently verified appraisal. BBC Sport’s September 2025 report gives the account.
How did the stadium and purchase price affect the comparison?
Hillsborough mattered because, in Maguire’s analysis, Wednesday did not own the ground and its condition weighed on the club’s value. A buyer assessing the club could not treat the stadium as an asset owned by the club, and the reported condition was another reason Maguire placed his estimate toward the lower end of the revenue-multiple range.

Chansiri bought Wednesday for £37.5 million in 2015, according to BBC Sport. The same report said the club had recorded almost £200 million in cumulative losses during his time in charge. Those historical figures help explain the financial backdrop, but neither establishes what a buyer would pay in 2025: the purchase price was from a decade earlier, while the valuation dispute concerned the club as it then stood.
Why was Chansiri’s creditor position another obstacle?
The asking valuation was not the only issue for a potential buyer. By March 2026, BBC Sport described Chansiri as Wednesday’s main creditor and reported he was understood to have loaned the club £60 million over more than a decade. Under the proposed deal at that point, a £15 million repayment was relevant to avoiding a further 15-point deduction. That made the treatment of the club’s debt part of the takeover’s sporting and financial terms, not simply a question of agreeing a headline sale price. BBC Sport’s 11 March 2026 account described the proposal before completion.

A later report gives a different figure in a different context. On 4 May 2026, Sky Sports reported that Chansiri had given Wednesday £64 million in loans and was owed a quarter of that amount, or £16 million. The BBC’s £60 million was an earlier reported estimate of loans over more than a decade; Sky’s £64 million and £16 million were reported after the takeover. They should be understood as figures from separate reports and stages of the process, not added together or treated as a single settled creditor ledger. Sky Sports’ follow-up also reported that the new owner had offered a conditional payment of several million pounds if Wednesday returned to the Championship at the first attempt.
What happened to the takeover and the points deductions?
Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025. Arise Capital Partners, a consortium led by David Storch, completed its takeover on 2 May 2026, ending Chansiri’s ownership. The EFL did not impose the additional 15-point deduction that had been anticipated during the proposed deal. The club remained subject to budget restrictions for two seasons but could sign players. This did not erase earlier sanctions: BBC Sport reported previous 12-point and six-point deductions connected to administration and missed payments. BBC Sport’s completion report sets out the outcome and EFL terms.

What the “Chansiri factor” means
The takeover impasse involved more than a disagreement over what Wednesday was worth. Chansiri’s reported £100 million valuation contrasted with Maguire’s £40 million–£50 million revenue-based estimate, with stadium ownership and condition among the factors in the expert’s assessment. Separately, Chansiri’s reported loans made creditor repayment and the EFL consequences part of the transaction. The sale ultimately went through after administration, but the reports do not establish a final sale price or provide a complete, independently verified account of the club’s creditor ledger.
