Musk Accuses Trump of Covering Up Epstein Files: What the Evidence Shows

Elon Musk accused Donald Trump of hiding Epstein files in June 2025 but provided no evidence for the claim. Later reviews and releases add context without substantiating his allegation about why records were withheld.

On June 5, 2025, Elon Musk alleged on X that Donald Trump was named in unreleased Epstein files and that this was why the files had not been made public. Musk offered no evidence for that claim, according to PolitiFact. Later records and government releases add context, but the sources reviewed do not substantiate Musk’s assertion about the reason records were withheld.

What Musk alleged

Musk posted on X on June 5, 2025: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” PolitiFact reproduced the post and reported that Musk provided no evidence for it.

The accusation came during a public dispute over a federal tax and spending bill. The Associated Press reported that Trump criticized Musk and threatened to terminate government subsidies and contracts for Musk’s companies as Musk attacked the administration’s bill. That context helps explain the timing, but it does not establish whether the claim was true.

What was known about Trump and Epstein

PolitiFact reported that Trump and Jeffrey Epstein attended some of the same parties in the 1990s and that flight logs showed Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet at least seven times. Those details document social contact; they do not establish participation in Epstein’s crimes or prove why any records were withheld.

#1 Best Overall
Adams Time Chart Map of History Book: 23' Fold-Out 6,000 Yrs Bible World
  • Sebastian C. Adams was a 19th-century educator and minister who spent years drawing this chart by hand before publishing it in 1871. He wanted ordinary families to see how the Bible and world history fit together, not as two separate stories, but as one. This edition carries that same purpose: 21 full-size panels, a hardcover case that keeps them together, and a chart you can open with your children the way parents did more than a century ago.
  • There is something almost overwhelming about seeing six thousand years laid out side by side. While one kingdom rises, another is already fading. While prophets speak in one land, armies are marching in another. This synchronological chart places sacred and secular history in parallel columns, using the same Ussher chronology that generations of North American families learned in Sunday school. Parents will recognize it. Their children will see it for the first time.
  • Fold it open like a book, or stretch it across the floor and watch it run twenty-three feet from wall to wall. Twenty-one panels unfold into one continuous stream of time, from Creation to the late 19th century. This is the kind of thing you gather the family around on a Sunday afternoon, or leave on a classroom wall for a semester. Kids who see the whole sweep of history stretched out before them start asking questions you never expected.
  • This edition preserves the 19th-century voice of the original chart—its handwritten commentary, its period artwork, and the way it reads like a document from another time. It is the same chart that hung in libraries and classrooms in the 1870s, inviting readers to trace the rise and fall of nations, the lives of prophets and kings, and the quiet turning points that shaped the world. You are not just looking at history. You are reading it the way a 19th-century student would have.
  • Some resources are meant to be studied. This one is meant to be lived with. Homeschool families use it as a spine for world history. Bible study groups unfold it on a long table. Parents tell us their kids keep it open on the floor, tracing the line from Adam to Abraham to David to Christ. It also makes a gift that says something: here is the whole story, from the beginning, in your hands.

PolitiFact also said it found no documented evidence in released investigative and prosecution records tying Trump to Epstein’s crimes, and no documented evidence that Trump visited Epstein’s private island. These are findings about the records PolitiFact reviewed, not a claim that every Epstein-related record was public or that every possible question has been resolved.

How the White House responded

When PolitiFact asked whether Trump was named in the files, the White House response did not answer that question. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt criticized Musk’s dissatisfaction with the bill instead. That was a non-answer to the question PolitiFact asked; it was neither a denial nor an admission.

What happened to Musk’s posts

Musk later deleted the Epstein-related posts. On June 11, 2025, he wrote: “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.” That statement expressed regret about some posts; it did not provide evidence for the earlier allegation or specify that he was retracting it.

What later reviews and releases establish

DOJ/FBI review in July 2025

Reuters reported that a DOJ/FBI review announced in July 2025 found no incriminating “client list” and no credible evidence that Epstein blackmailed prominent people. The review also affirmed the prior finding that Epstein died by suicide. Those are the review’s conclusions; they do not establish that every related record was public or settle Musk’s claim about the motive for withholding files.

DOJ release on January 30, 2026

The Department of Justice said that on January 30, 2026, it published more than 3 million additional pages under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, bringing the total production to nearly 3.5 million pages. DOJ said notable individuals and politicians were not redacted in the release. The scale and stated redaction policy of that production do not, by themselves, prove Musk’s allegation about why records had previously been withheld.

Additional records reported in March 2026

In March 2026, the Associated Press reported that DOJ published additional records concerning a woman’s uncorroborated accusations against Trump. DOJ said the records had been incorrectly coded as duplicative and were inadvertently omitted from the earlier production. The report did not corroborate those accusations. They are separate from Musk’s 2025 assertion about the reason files were withheld.

Checking the DOJ library

The DOJ Epstein Library page reported a last-updated date of September 11, 2026, and said it could be updated if additional documents were identified for release. That date is a snapshot of the page’s status, not a guarantee that the library will remain unchanged.

How to assess the allegation

  • Separate the claims. Whether a person appears in a record, whether that person committed wrongdoing, and whether officials withheld records for a particular reason are distinct questions.
  • Match the source to the claim. Musk’s post is evidence that he made the allegation, not evidence that it was true. PolitiFact’s reporting addresses documented association and released records; DOJ and FBI findings describe their review; DOJ’s releases describe what the department published.
  • Keep the dates attached. The accusation was made in June 2025. The review and large-scale releases came later, so they provide subsequent context rather than evidence Musk supplied at the time.
