The most expensive Chevrolet Corvette sold at auction is a 1963 Corvette Grand Sport, chassis 003. RM Sotheby’s reported that it sold for $18,705,000 at its 2026 Monterey auction, calling it the most valuable Corvette ever sold at auction. That is the auction house’s published sale amount—not a separately reported hammer price.
Which Corvette holds the auction record?
The record belongs to chassis 003, a 1963 Corvette Grand Sport. RM Sotheby’s announced the result on August 17, 2026, and its Monterey lot page records the car as sold for $18,705,000. RM Sotheby’s announcement describes it as the most valuable Corvette ever sold at auction; the lot listing provides the vehicle details and sale result.
The sources publish a single sale amount and do not provide a separate hammer-price breakdown. It is therefore most accurate to report $18,705,000 as the published sale price, without labeling it a hammer-only figure.
What made chassis 003 different?
A factory-built competition Corvette
This was not an ordinary production Sting Ray or a new-car charity sale. Chassis 003 was one of just five Grand Sports built and the first of three coupes. RM Sotheby’s describes it as a factory-built competition car with hundreds of components distinct from a production Sting Ray. Its rarity and competition specification set it apart from the Corvettes commonly compared in charity-auction headlines.

A documented racing history
The lot history records SCCA competition and participation in the Mecom Racing Team’s 1963 Bahamas Speed Week effort. The car placed second in class at the 1964 12 Hours of Sebring and third in class at Sebring in 1965. Period drivers included A.J. Foyt, Jim Hall, Augie Pabst, John Cannon, Dick Thompson, and Delmo Johnson.
Restoration and recognition
RM Sotheby’s says the car was restored during its current owner’s 23-year stewardship and returned to its 1964 Sebring livery. The lot page also notes Bloomington Gold certifications and National Corvette Restorers Society recognition. These are elements of the car’s documented history; the available information does not establish that any single one caused the final price.

How does the record compare with famous Corvette charity sales?
Several high-profile Corvette results are often discussed alongside auction records, but they were charity sales of new production cars, not competing records for the Grand Sport. The amounts below are those published by Chevrolet or General Motors; they are comparisons, not an exhaustive ranking of every Corvette auction.
| Corvette and sale | Published amount | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1963 Corvette Grand Sport, chassis 003 — RM Sotheby’s, 2026 Monterey | $18,705,000 | RM Sotheby’s states this is the most valuable Corvette sold at auction. Source |
| First retail 2025 Corvette ZR1, VIN 001 — 2025 | $3.7 million | Charity sale benefiting the American Red Cross; Chevrolet/GM reported the hammer price. Source |
| One-of-one 2026 Corvette ZR1X — Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, 2026 | $2.6 million | Charity sale benefiting Tunnel to Towers. Source |
| First retail 2023 Corvette Z06 70th Anniversary Edition — Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, 2022 | $3.6 million | Charity sale for Operation Homefront. Source |
| First 2024 Corvette E-Ray — Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach, 2023 | $1.1 million | Amount raised for DonorsChoose. Source |
The distinction matters: a charity auction can produce an exceptional result for a first-retail or one-off new car, but those sales are not the same kind of comparison as the Grand Sport’s auction record. RM Sotheby’s reported the $18,705,000 Grand Sport result as the Corvette record after the earlier charity sales.

What the record does—and does not—tell you
The result establishes a published auction sale amount for one rare, historically documented competition Corvette. It does not, by itself, provide a general valuation for other Grand Sports or Corvettes. The examples above also show why comparing headline figures requires attention to the vehicle’s identity, sale date and venue, published amount, and whether the event was a charity sale. The sources cited here are representative comparisons rather than a complete survey of Corvette auction history.
