The best utility token depends on what you need it to do: pay network fees or service costs, help secure a network through staking, or participate in governance. Based on documented functions, LINK, UNI, ETH, and BNB offer distinct examples—not an objective investment ranking. A token’s utility does not establish its value, adoption durability, or likely return.
What makes a token a utility token?
A utility token is used for a function within a blockchain network or protocol. That function might be paying fees, purchasing a service, staking to support network security, or exercising governance rights. Those uses are not interchangeable: a token used to pay for a service does something different from one that gives holders voting power.
For a useful comparison, consider what the token does, how directly the function requires the token, what risks accompany that function, and what the documentation does—and does not—establish about demand. The official sources below describe intended mechanisms; they are not independent evaluations of investment quality.
How LINK, UNI, ETH, and BNB compare
| Token | Documented function | What that means for users | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| LINK | Payment for Chainlink services and staking associated with network security. | Used for service payments and in a staking mechanism intended to support service reliability. | Chainlink describes rewards and potential slashing tied to performance requirements; these do not guarantee yield or appreciation. Chainlink Economics |
| UNI | Uniswap protocol governance. | Holders can delegate voting power and participate in protocol decisions. | Governance is not a direct cash-flow entitlement. Uniswap governance overview |
| ETH | Ethereum transaction fees and proof-of-stake staking. | ETH pays gas fees and is staked by validators as part of network security. | Fees vary with congestion and transaction complexity; staking can expose participants to slashing and, through pools, third-party, software, or smart-contract risks. Ethereum fees · Ethereum staking · Pooled staking |
| BNB | BNB Smart Chain gas and staking. | BNB is used to pay smart-contract gas and to stake in the network. | BNB Chain describes staking as contributing to network security and earning rewards; displayed reward figures can change. BNB Chain: What is BNB · BNB Smart Chain introduction |
What each token is used for
LINK: Chainlink service payments and staking
Chainlink describes LINK as its native digital asset, used to pay for services and support network security through staking. Its documentation connects staking rewards and possible slashing to performance requirements. This is a description of the project’s mechanism, not evidence of a guaranteed return. UNI: Uniswap governance
UNI’s documented role centers on Uniswap protocol governance. Holders can delegate voting power and take part in decisions, including matters such as treasury spending, protocol fees, and additional token issuance subject to stated limits. Voting rights should not be confused with a promise of income. Uniswap governance overview
ETH: Ethereum fees and proof-of-stake security
Ethereum requires ETH for gas fees. The amount varies according to network conditions and transaction complexity; Ethereum’s documentation states that all gas fees are paid in native ETH. ETH staking is part of the network’s proof-of-stake security design, and validator misconduct can result in slashing. Ethereum fees · Ethereum staking

People who do not operate a validator may use pooled staking, which can make participation possible with smaller amounts. Pooling also adds reliance on third parties, software, or smart contracts, each with its own risks. Ethereum pooled staking
BNB: BNB Smart Chain gas and staking
BNB Chain identifies BNB as the native token for smart-contract gas and staking on BNB Smart Chain. Its documentation describes staking as a way to contribute to network security and earn rewards. Any reward figure shown on a live staking page is subject to change and should not be treated as a stable rate. BNB Chain: What is BNB · BNB Smart Chain introduction

How to decide which function matters to you
- If you need to use a network or service: Focus on the token required for the specific activity. ETH pays Ethereum gas; BNB pays BNB Smart Chain gas; LINK is used to pay for Chainlink services.
- If you want governance participation: UNI’s documented use is voting in Uniswap protocol governance. Consider whether you intend to follow proposals and delegate or cast votes; governance does not itself promise a financial payout.
- If you are considering staking: Identify the network, the validator or pool arrangement, the potential penalties, and any third-party or technical dependencies. A stated staking role or reward mechanism is not the same as a guaranteed return.
- If you are comparing investment prospects: Do not treat the label “utility token” or the existence of a use case as proof of token demand, fair value, or future performance. The cited project and network materials do not provide a common independent dataset for comparing adoption or demand across these four tokens.
What this comparison cannot tell you
There is no defensible overall “best” ranking from these functions alone. Payment, staking, and governance are different kinds of utility, and the cited materials do not establish a like-for-like measure of adoption, demand, or investment performance. The sources are official project or network documentation describing how the systems are intended to work.
Transaction fees, staking conditions, token access, and legal treatment can vary over time and by jurisdiction. Because no country or investor profile is specified, this comparison does not recommend a purchase route or determine whether any token is suitable for you.
