Minecraft passed 300 million copies sold in October 2023, Mojang announced at Minecraft Live. That was a milestone reported at the time—not the game’s current total: Guinness World Records later listed 350 million units sold as of April 2025. The anniversary reference was also time-specific: Minecraft turned 15 in 2024.
How many copies of Minecraft have been sold?
The answer depends on the date attached to the figure. At Minecraft Live 2023, Mojang said the game had recently passed 300 million copies sold. Guinness World Records dates the threshold crossing to October 15, 2023. Its record page later listed 350,000,000 units sold as of April 2025, attributing the figure to Mojang’s official Minecraft Annual 2026. That is a dated listing, not a live count for 2026.

| More than 300 million copies | October 2023; Mojang announcement at Minecraft Live, recapped by Xbox Wire on October 16, 2023. Guinness dates the threshold crossing to October 15. | The milestone announced shortly before the game’s 15th anniversary year. |
| 350,000,000 units | Listed by Guinness World Records as of April 2025; the page attributes the confirmation to Mojang’s official Minecraft Annual 2026. | A later dated figure, not the same-time measurement as the October 2023 announcement. |
The figures establish that the reported total rose from the 300-million threshold to the later 350-million listing. They do not establish an exact count on either date, sales by platform or region, or a precise growth rate between the two reports.
Why was the milestone tied to Minecraft’s 15th anniversary?
The October 2023 announcement looked ahead to the next year, when Minecraft would turn 15. The official anniversary page frames 2024 as the game’s 15-year celebration. The anniversary was therefore upcoming when the sales news broke; it is not an upcoming event now.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The timing gave the milestone a clear context: a game approaching 15 years since launch had passed 300 million copies sold. It does not mean the sales announcement was itself an anniversary event.
How was the 300 million milestone confirmed?
The milestone was announced at Minecraft Live 2023 and reported in Xbox Wire’s October 16 recap. It was also restated in a March 21, 2024 article on Microsoft Developer by Francisco Rius, Mojang Studios’ Head of Data: “Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time, with over 300,000,000 copies sold.” The statement appears in his Microsoft Developer article.

The Xbox Wire recap also carries a Spanish-language line celebrating that the game had recently surpassed 300 million copies, without naming an individual speaker in the accessible passage. The figure is thus a publisher-reported sales threshold; the cited sources do not provide a detailed audit or a platform-by-platform breakdown.

It is a sales milestone, not a count of every person who has ever played Minecraft. The cited figures do not specify how sales are distributed across platforms or geographies, and they do not report a precise total beyond the stated thresholds. The later Guinness listing should be read with its April 2025 date and attribution, rather than treated as a current, continuously updated counter.

The anniversary story also included ordinary Minecraft-related products: the Xbox Wire recap mentions a LEGO Minecraft Pumpkin Farm. That supports noting a physical LEGO Minecraft set alongside the game’s digital success; it does not establish that the set was an official 15th-anniversary product.
