The AO 1 Point Slam is a knockout tennis competition in which a single point decides each match: win and advance; lose and you are out. How does the 1 Point Slam work?
Each match is decided by one point, rather than a conventional game or set. The winner advances to the next round and the loser is eliminated. That sudden-death format means there is no time to recover from a slow start or a lost game.
Who serves, and how many serves do players get?
In the 2026 community rules, the host could use a coin toss or rock, paper, scissors to determine which player chose to serve or receive. ABC reported that rock, paper, scissors was used in the 2026 main draw. The method should not be assumed to be fixed for every stage or future edition.
Serve allowances have also differed by player status and edition. In 2025 and 2026 event descriptions, amateur or non-ranked entrants generally had two serves, while a current ATP- or WTA-ranked player had one. The 2027 player information treats players who have had an ATP or WTA ranking above 100 as professionals for the one-serve rule. Check the regulations for the specific event before relying on a serve detail.

What was the 2026 prize?
The 2026 regulations set the overall winner’s prize at AUD $1 million and provided a separate $50,000 grant to the winner’s affiliated club, association, school or coach. A separate announcement offered an EV3 to the last amateur standing. These were 2026-specific terms, not guaranteed prizes for every later edition. Tennis Australia’s AO26 regulations contain the formal prize provisions.
Who won the 2026 event?
Amateur Jordan Smith won the 2026 1 Point Slam at Rod Laver Arena. ABC News reported that Smith defeated Jannik Sinner on the way to the final, then beat Joanna Garland in the final. ABC News’ event report covers the result; Tennis Australia also identifies Smith as champion.

How did the event change from 2025 to 2026?
The “million dollar” label reflects the 2026 prize increase, not the inaugural event’s payout. The draw also grew. The figures below are for the editions named, rather than a promise about future formats.

What is announced for the 2027 1 Point Slam?
As of 8 October 2026, the Australian Open had scheduled the next event for Wednesday, 13 January 2027, at Rod Laver Arena, with a $1 million winner-takes-all prize announced. Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka and Jannik Sinner were named as signed-up players. The tournament’s community pathway is expected to run from local events in September–November 2026 to State and Territory Championships in December, followed by the AO event in January. The Australian Open’s 2027 announcement gives the current schedule and participant details.
The announcement also names Haier as presenting partner, YoPRO as an official supporting partner, Dunlop as the official tennis ball and UTR as the official tournament platform. Those partnerships do not, by themselves, establish broadcast or viewing arrangements.

Can community players enter without a UTR?
Tennis Australia’s current player information says community entry does not require a minimum UTR rating, but entrants need a Tennis ID. It says current and former ATP/WTA players may enter community events. Eligibility and main-draw rules can change, so consult the current Tennis Australia player information and the applicable event regulations.
