What facilities did Mineral Resources plan?
PerthNow reported on 12 August 2021 that Mineral Resources (MinRes) chief executive Chris Ellison announced a “resort-style” approach for new camps, while the company was also considering upgrades to existing villages. The planned amenities he named were:
- Larger rooms, with the aim of making it easier for couples to work and live together on site.
- Olympic-sized pools and wellness centres.
- Restaurants, cabins and cafés.
- Crèches at some camps on the coast.
Ellison said, “We’re going to have bigger rooms (in mining villages) and encourage couples to be able to work and live together on site.” He also described the broader amenity plans as “Olympic-sized pools” alongside wellness centres, restaurants, cabins and cafés. These were announced intentions, not a site-by-site construction schedule. PerthNow’s report named Wodgina lithium mine near Marble Bar as an example of a camp, but did not provide a complete list of locations covered.
Why was MinRes proposing the changes?
The company presented improved camp facilities as a way to attract and retain workers as skills shortages worsened. Ellison said MinRes wanted employees to stay for a long time, potentially for their whole working careers, and described an aspiration to make the work environment “probably in the top 20 per cent in the country.” That was his goal, not a measured ranking or independent assessment.

MinRes chief financial officer Mark Wilson cited Wodgina as a camp with appealing facilities, saying: “It’s got great facilities, and it’s going to deliver a great product when it gets going.” The comment referred to the camp as an example; it does not establish that Wodgina was the only location in the plans.
Did the proposed camp upgrades happen?
The available report establishes what MinRes said it planned in August 2021, but does not confirm whether the upgrades were completed or whether those amenities are operating now. It also does not establish the projects’ cost, schedule, contractors or current site-by-site facilities. Treat the “resort-style” description as the company’s announced ambition, not proof of delivery.

What did the reported profit figure mean?
PerthNow reported that MinRes recorded net profit of $1.27 billion for the year ended 30 June 2021, attributing it to record iron ore sales volumes and prices. That figure was financial background in the article; it was not a stated budget or cost for the camp upgrades.
