Microsoft’s 2020 MSN Layoffs: What AI Replaced—and What It Didn’t

Microsoft’s 2020 cuts affected news curators and production workers as it automated parts of MSN’s story-selection process—not an entire newsroom of original reporters.

The headline “MSN fires journalists, replaces them with AI” refers to a real Microsoft workforce reduction reported on May 30, 2020—not a recent development. Microsoft ended or wound down contracts involving dozens of editorial and news-production workers as it automated parts of how stories were selected and presented on MSN, Microsoft News and Edge. The affected work was largely news curation and production, not original reporting by an entire newsroom.

What happened at Microsoft in 2020?

In late May 2020, Microsoft told workers and suppliers that editorial roles connected with its news surfaces would end or wind down. Some contracts were expected to finish around June 30 or during July, depending on the worker or supplier. The Guardian reported the changes on May 30 and said Microsoft described them as the result of regular business evaluation, not the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision came during the pandemic’s early months, but that timing does not establish the pandemic as its cause. The Guardian’s account describes the UK roles and Microsoft’s stated explanation.

How many workers were affected?

Contemporary reports used different counts, reflecting different regions and employment arrangements. They should not be treated as a single confirmed global headcount.

Reported scope Figure and qualification
United Kingdom About 27 PA Media employees were reportedly told their roles would end, according to The Guardian.
United States About 50 news-production workers were reported as affected; some were contractors supplied through staffing agencies, according to IBTimes India’s account of Seattle Times reporting.
Combined total in some coverage About 77 people, a figure used by Futurism that combines reported counts rather than establishing a definitive worldwide total.

Some workers were employed by outside suppliers rather than directly by Microsoft. That is why “Microsoft fired every journalist” is not an accurate description of the employment arrangements.

What did the editorial workers do?

Many affected workers helped decide what users saw, even when they did not report the underlying stories. Their tasks included choosing articles from partner publishers, editing headlines, selecting images, arranging story packages or slideshows, and planning content. They also applied editorial judgment about suitability and quality, and could elevate smaller publishers or keep violent, misleading or inappropriate material off a prominent news surface. The Guardian reported these duties in its account of the cuts.

That distinction matters: choosing and framing a story is editorial work. A platform can substantially change a publisher’s reach through its selection, headline, image and placement decisions without writing the article itself.

What did “replacing them with AI” mean?

Reports described automation in the news-distribution pipeline: software could scan publisher feeds, identify stories, rank or order them, and help select headlines and presentation elements. Futurism’s contemporary report described automated story discovery and curation.

The available reporting does not establish that Microsoft replaced an entire team of original reporters with a system that independently conducted interviews, investigated claims and produced comparable journalism. The clearest description is that Microsoft automated parts of editorial selection and packaging for content largely created by outside publishers. “AI” in 2020 coverage can also blur together algorithms and automated editorial tools; it should not automatically be read as meaning today’s generative AI wrote every story.

What did the Little Mix image error show?

A later MSN image-selection error made the risks of automated presentation concrete. A story about Little Mix member Jade Thirlwall’s experience with racism was reportedly paired with a photograph of fellow member Leigh-Anne Pinnock. The incident is recorded as an alleged algorithmic-selection failure by the AI Incident Database; Futurism also reported on the error.

The mistake drew attention to identity-sensitive editorial decisions: a photo can misidentify a person and distort the meaning of a story, even if the article text is accurate. The available incident record does not establish which specific system caused the error or prove that no human was involved, so it is not evidence that one identified AI model acted alone.

What does MSN say about AI and human review now?

Microsoft’s published MSN AI content policy says AI-generated content must have material human intervention or review, and generally prohibits unreviewed AI-generated content, subject to limited exceptions. It recognizes AI assistance in tasks such as research, newsgathering, data analysis, transcription, translation and headline or copy assistance. The policy also recommends disclosing AI assistance and treats AI-revised headlines and AI-assisted research as AI-assisted content.

Microsoft’s partner guidance says MSN uses automation and human review. Its content-ranking explanation describes algorithmic selection and ordering alongside editorial oversight, while its publishing guidelines describe both automated and human content review. These are published platform rules and descriptions, not proof that every item on every surface or in every country follows an identical workflow—or that every historical item received effective human review.

Why the episode matters beyond the headline

The 2020 shift was about automating editorial gatekeeping: deciding which stories, headlines and images reach users. Software can process large volumes and update feeds quickly; human editors can weigh context, ambiguity, source quality and cultural sensitivity. Personalized ranking may make a feed more relevant to an individual, while hands-on curation can deliberately widen exposure to smaller publishers or a broader range of views.

That creates a labor and accountability trade-off. Removing human curation can reduce staffing needs, but when a headline or image is wrong, responsibility may be harder for readers and publishers to identify. The Little Mix error illustrates why selection and presentation are not merely mechanical tasks.

Microsoft later announced support for local journalism in October 2020, including funding, technology and cybersecurity assistance, and distribution opportunities. The company said its network reached more than 500 million people monthly and that it had shared more than $1 billion in revenue with publishers since 2014. Those figures and initiatives were Microsoft’s own claims in its announcement. Supporting publishers economically while automating some editorial labor are not mutually exclusive, but they reflect different priorities: helping news organizations reach audiences and reducing human work inside a distribution platform.
