The Surface Book 2 is a detachable 2-in-1 laptop that Microsoft announced in 2017—not its latest 2-in-1 today. It came in 13.5-inch and 15-inch versions, but processor, memory and graphics vary by configuration. For buyers considering a used unit, the exact processor matters: Microsoft lists only the 8th-generation i5-8350U and i7-8650U versions for the Windows 11 upgrade path, not the 7th-generation i5-7300U. Its US launch prices were $1,499 and $2,499, respectively; those are historical prices, not current used-market valuations.

Surface Book 2 specifications at a glance

Microsoft’s specifications show two screen sizes with the same 3:2 aspect ratio and 10-point touch support. The larger display has more total pixels, while the smaller display has slightly higher pixel density. Configuration details below are based on Microsoft’s product specifications; confirm the exact CPU, graphics, memory and ports on an individual listing.

For the complete configuration details, see Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 specifications.

What the detachable design and ports offer

The display detaches from the keyboard base, allowing the screen to be used as a tablet. The design makes the base part of the buying decision: check that the detachment mechanism works, that the keyboard and trackpad function, and that the supplied power supply is compatible with the specific configuration. Microsoft lists different supplied power-supply wattages across configurations, so do not assume a charger for one Surface Book 2 is suitable for every other one.

#1 Best Overall
Microsoft Surface Book 2 (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB) - 13.5in (Renewed)
  • Microsoft Surface Book 2 Features a 7th generation Intel Dual Core i5 Processor, 256 GB of storage, 8 GB RAM, and up to 17 hours of video playback
  • Includes an Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU
  • The fastest Surface Book yet, with 2x more power
  • Vibrant PixelSense Display: now available with an improved 13.5in touchscreen

Microsoft lists USB 3.0, USB-C, an SDXC card reader, Surface Connect and a headset jack. Check the actual device and listing rather than relying on a generic product title, particularly if a particular port or discrete GPU is essential.

Surface Book 2 price: original launch figures, not current values

Contemporary US launch coverage in October 2017 reported starting prices of $1,499 for the 13.5-inch model and $2,499 for the 15-inch model, before any configuration upgrades. These figures describe launch-era starting prices, not what a used or refurbished Surface Book 2 should cost today. No current retailer price or stock was established here, so compare live listings for the exact configuration and condition rather than treating the original prices as a resale estimate. TIME’s 2017 launch report provides the historical US pricing context.

  • Windows Hello face authentication camera (front-facing), 5.0 MP front-facing camera with 1080p HD video, 8.0 MP rear-facing autofocus camera with 1080p HD video, Windows 10 Professional 64-bit Edition

Battery life: how to read Microsoft’s 17-hour claim

Microsoft advertised up to 17 hours of video playback. This was a manufacturer claim based on testing in October 2017 with preproduction devices, not a guarantee for every configuration or a promise of present-day runtime. A used device’s battery condition, workload and settings all affect how long it lasts. Ask about battery health and, if possible, test the unit under the kind of use you expect. Microsoft’s specifications and 2017 launch announcement provide the product context for the original claim.

Windows 11 eligibility and ongoing support

“Surface Book 2” by itself does not establish Windows 11 upgrade eligibility. Microsoft’s listed upgrade path includes the Surface Book 2 with an 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8350U or i7-8650U, and excludes the 7th-generation i5-7300U version. Other Windows 11 system requirements may also apply. Before buying, ask for the processor model or verify it on the device; do not infer eligibility from screen size or the Surface Book 2 name. See Microsoft’s Surface Windows 11 upgrade list.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 13.5" (Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512 GB)
  • Microsoft Surface Book 2 Features a 8th generation Intel Quad Core i7 Processor, 512 GB of storage, 16 GB RAM, and up to 17 hours of video playback
  • Enhanced Graphics performance with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 discrete GPU w/2GB GDDR5 Graphics Memory
  • The fastest Surface Book yet, with 2x more power. Runs Windows 10 Pro
  • Vibrant PixelSense Display: now available with an improved 13.5" touchscreen
  • Four versatile modes of use and new USB-C port

Software support has two separate parts. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, while its Surface Book 2 update history says the model’s driver and firmware servicing period has ended. Previously released drivers remain available, but the device no longer receives new Surface driver and firmware updates. An eligible processor does not change that servicing status. Microsoft documents the model’s status in its Surface Book 2 update history.
