Microsoft says its ID@Xbox program has paid more than $5 billion to independent developers worldwide since the program launched in 2013. The company announced the milestone on March 18, 2025; its Xbox developer landing page still lists “$5B+ Paid to independent developers” as of October 8, 2026. The total is Microsoft-reported, not an independently audited figure, and Microsoft has not published a developer-by-developer breakdown.

How much has ID@Xbox paid indie developers?

In a March 18, 2025, Xbox Wire post, Guy Richards, Microsoft’s Director of ID@Xbox, said that “more than $5 billion” had been paid to independent developers around the world since ID@Xbox launched in 2013. Microsoft’s announcement describes the milestone as payments. Microsoft’s current Xbox developer page, accessed October 8, 2026, displays “$5B+ Paid to independent developers.”

The number is a cumulative program figure, not a stated annual amount, grant pool, or average per studio. Microsoft has not explained the calculation method or disclosed how the total is divided among developers or games. The available official sources support what Microsoft reported, but they do not independently verify the amount.

What is ID@Xbox, and who receives the money?

ID@Xbox is Microsoft’s publishing and support program for independent developers who want to bring games to Xbox. Microsoft says approved developers can access software development kits, development kits, documentation, and support. The program’s described process covers onboarding and concept submission, development and certification preparation, store setup, pre-launch work, release, and ongoing support.

Microsoft also lists technical and publishing assistance, funding opportunities, and promotion and discovery opportunities. The $5 billion figure refers to payments to independent developers; the cited sources do not specify the amount any particular developer, title, or type of support received.

Developer Acceleration Program

The Developer Acceleration Program (DAP) operates within the broader ID@Xbox initiative. Microsoft describes DAP as offering non-recoupable porting funds, prototype funding, and developer education. In an April 16, 2025, article, Microsoft said DAP had partnered with more than 200 titles and helped over 75 reach Xbox. Those are company-reported program counts, not a breakdown of the $5 billion.

How to interpret Microsoft’s other ID@Xbox figures

Microsoft has published other measures of the program’s activity, but they count different things and should not be added to, or treated as explanations of, the payment total.

Figure What Microsoft said it measures Source and date
More than $5 billion Payments to independent developers worldwide since ID@Xbox launched in 2013 Xbox Wire, March 18, 2025
$5B+ Paid to independent developers; the landing page does not give a calculation method or breakdown Microsoft Xbox Developer page, accessed October 8, 2026
Over 6,000 Indie titles launched Microsoft Game Dev, April 16, 2025
5,000+ Partners across 100 countries Microsoft Game Dev, April 16, 2025
Over 1,000 Games launched in the prior year, according to Microsoft’s March 2025 post Xbox Wire, March 18, 2025
Over 200 teams and creators People or groups supported by DAP, as described in the March 2025 post; this is a different unit from DAP’s title count Xbox Wire, March 18, 2025
More than 200 titles; over 75 reached Xbox DAP-partnered titles and titles that reached Xbox, respectively Microsoft Game Dev, April 16, 2025

The distinction matters: payments, titles launched, partner organizations, supported teams, and DAP-partnered titles are not interchangeable measures. Microsoft’s figures describe program scale, but none of the listed activity counts reveals how the cumulative payments were distributed.

What the milestone does—and does not—say about indie developers

The announcement is evidence that Microsoft says a large cumulative amount has gone to independent developers through ID@Xbox. It is not evidence that every participating studio received money, that payments were equal, or that a particular game or studio was profitable. The cited sources do not provide recipient-level amounts, terms, or a calculation methodology, so readers cannot use the total to estimate an individual developer’s payout.

For developers, Microsoft’s program materials describe practical support alongside publishing access. In its April 2025 guidance, Microsoft recommended beginning certification planning six months before launch and budgeting at least two months for testing and resubmission. It also advised developers not to announce a public release date until certification had passed, to build a community early, maintain a strong store detail page, and plan a post-launch roadmap. These are Microsoft’s recommendations, not independent performance benchmarks.

  • The retail version includes: a double-sided poster with artwork by Bryce Kho.

Microsoft also says Xbox can support and amplify a game’s marketing, while the developer should own its marketing strategy. Those recommendations offer context about the work around a release; they do not change what the $5 billion figure measures.

Xbox reach is separate from the payout total

Microsoft’s March 2025 post described independent games reaching Xbox consoles, gaming PCs, laptops, Windows handhelds, mobile devices, tablets, and cloud-enabled televisions and streaming devices. It also said more than 1,000 games supported Xbox Play Anywhere at that time, allowing play across Xbox and Windows 10/11 PCs with saves, progress, and achievements carried between devices. These platform and engagement details describe potential distribution and play, not developer payments.
