Microsoft announced on October 26, 2023, that Chris Capossela was leaving after 32 years with the company and that Takeshi Numoto would become executive vice president and chief marketing officer. The planned succession also elevated Yusuf Mehdi to consumer CMO, with responsibility for Copilot product marketing. As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft still lists Numoto as EVP and CMO.
What Microsoft announced in October 2023
CEO Satya Nadella announced the leadership change on October 26, 2023. Numoto became EVP and CMO, reporting to Nadella. Capossela’s overall marketing responsibilities transferred to Numoto as part of a succession plan Nadella said he and Capossela had been working on. Nadella described the arrival of a new AI era as the right moment to put that plan into effect. Microsoft’s announcement
The same announcement reshaped other parts of the organization. Yusuf Mehdi became EVP and consumer CMO, reporting to Numoto. Ami Silverman’s consumer sales organization moved under Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King.
The CMO change took effect with the announcement. GeekWire reported at the time that Capossela was expected to help with the transition through the end of 2023; that timing was reported by the outlet, not specified in Nadella’s memo. GeekWire’s contemporary report

Was Capossela fired or retiring?
Microsoft’s announcement describes a planned succession and says Capossela was leaving the company. It does not call the departure a firing, layoff, or retirement. Capossela’s own public statement likewise said he was leaving and looking forward to the next chapter of his life while supporting the transition. Capossela’s statement
Capossela’s 32 years at Microsoft
Capossela joined Microsoft in 1991 and held roles spanning marketing, product management, general management, and vice president positions. His work included Microsoft Office and other major businesses. For more than two years in the late 1990s, he served as a speech assistant to Bill Gates.

Nadella said Capossela had led worldwide marketing and served as the company’s CMO for the previous ten years. That description is best understood as roughly a decade as Microsoft’s top marketing leader, not 32 years as CMO. Formal dates for CMO and EVP appointments can differ depending on which title or role definition is used. Nadella credited him with strengthening Microsoft’s brand and culture and advancing diversity and inclusion and leadership talent. Microsoft’s account of Capossela’s tenure

In the CMO role, Microsoft describes Numoto as leading worldwide marketing across product marketing, brand, advertising, research, events, and communications. Nadella highlighted Numoto’s ability to connect engineering, finance, operations, sales, and marketing. His background therefore fit a company seeking to bring its marketing leadership close to cloud and commercial execution as it entered the AI era.
Why the succession was more than a one-for-one replacement
Numoto took the overall CMO role, but Microsoft also gave Mehdi a distinct consumer marketing remit. Mehdi was tasked with leading Copilot product marketing and continued to lead the Search, Ads & News and Devices & Creativity customer solution areas. He joined Microsoft’s senior leadership team. This division matters: the announcement did not say Numoto personally assumed every consumer marketing responsibility. It set up an overall marketing leader and a consumer CMO with major consumer and Copilot duties. The timing and the stated AI-era rationale support the interpretation that Microsoft wanted marketing more closely connected to cloud, enterprise sales, and AI commercialization; they do not establish that the personnel change itself altered product engineering or ownership.

Numoto’s appointment was not a short-lived interim arrangement. Microsoft’s October 1, 2025, commercial reorganization placed his marketing organization within Judson Althoff’s commercial organization. Numoto reported to Althoff as CMO, while continuing to report directly to Nadella on company-wide business models, planning, consumer marketing, corporate brand, and communications.
