MEXC Listed the Most Tokens in CoinGecko’s 13-Month Comparison; MEXC Says It Ranked No. 2 in Spot Share

MEXC listed 1,281 tokens from January 2025 through January 2026, narrowly ahead of Gate’s 1,273, according to CoinGecko’s 2026 report. Separately, MEXC said it held 8.2% of global spot trading volume and ranked second over August 2025 through January 2026. These are different measures, covering different periods; the 8.2% figure is reported by MEXC, not independently repeated in CoinGecko’s accessible report text.

What do the two headline claims mean?

The headline combines a count of newly listed tokens with a share of trading volume. Listing totals indicate how many assets an exchange added during a period. Spot market share describes an exchange’s portion of spot trading volume during a different period. Neither number is a live measure of current activity.

Measure Reported result Period and attribution
Token listings MEXC: 1,281; Gate: 1,273 January 2025–January 2026; CoinGecko’s 2026 report
Global spot market share MEXC says 8.2%, ranked No. 2 August 2025–January 2026; MEXC’s March 17, 2026 release, which attributes the data to CoinGecko
Perpetual-futures market share MEXC says 11.8%, ranked No. 3 August 2025–January 2026; MEXC’s March 17, 2026 release

How many tokens did MEXC list?

CoinGecko’s CEX & DEX Trading Activity Report 2026 counts 1,281 MEXC listings from January 2025 through January 2026, the highest total among the major centralized exchanges it compared. Gate followed closely with 1,273. CoinGecko characterizes both totals as just under 100 listings per month on average.

The comparison also gives scale: GeckoTerminal recorded 24.04 million new tokens over the same thirteen-month span, as cited by CoinGecko. The leading centralized-exchange listing total amounted to only 0.01% of tokens created in that comparison. A listing count therefore reflects activity and breadth, not a broad share of newly created tokens.

What does MEXC’s 8.2% spot-share claim establish?

In a March 17, 2026 release, MEXC said it had 8.2% of global spot market share and ranked second for the six months from August 2025 through January 2026. The release attributes the figure to CoinGecko’s report. CoinGecko’s accessible report page confirms the listing comparison but does not reproduce the exact 8.2% figure in its text, so the precise percentage and ranking should be treated as MEXC’s reported claim rather than an independently confirmed number from that page.

Spot trading means buying or selling an asset for settlement on the spot market, rather than trading a derivative contract. The 8.2% figure is a historical share for the stated six-month window; it should not be read as MEXC’s share today.

Why keep spot and perpetual-futures rankings separate?

MEXC’s release also says it ranked third, with 11.8% share of perpetual-futures trading over August 2025 through January 2026. That is a separate derivatives-market statistic, not part of the 8.2% spot figure. Perpetual futures are derivatives, and their trading volume should not be combined with spot-market volume when comparing exchange shares.

CoinGecko’s report provides broader context rather than another MEXC-specific share figure: decentralized exchanges’ share of perpetual-futures volume reached 10.2% in January 2026. That market-wide measure does not verify MEXC’s 11.8% claim.

How do centralized and decentralized exchanges fit into the picture?

CoinGecko reports that decentralized exchanges’ share of spot volume rose from 6.9% in January 2024 to 13.6% in January 2026. At the same time, centralized exchanges maintained more than $1 trillion in monthly spot volume during the period discussed in the report. These are market-wide trends, not MEXC figures: they show that DEX activity grew while CEXs remained the larger venue by monthly spot volume in the report’s period.

The distinction matters when reading rankings. A CEX listing comparison is not a comparison of every decentralized venue, and a share of global spot volume is not interchangeable with a share of perpetual-futures volume.

What can listing counts and market-share rankings tell you?

  • Listings: A high count shows that an exchange added many assets during the measured window. It does not establish the assets’ quality, liquidity, safety, or investment merit.
  • Volume share: A reported share describes trading activity under a source’s methodology and for a specific period. It does not guarantee that the exchange is suitable for an individual user.
  • Rank: A second-place position is relative to the comparison and period used; it is not a universal rating of service or safety.

CoinGecko cautions: “Trading is a highly risky activity that can lead to major losses, please therefore consult your financial advisor before making any decision.”
