Meta is not abandoning VR outright. It has closed three acquired VR studios, stopped new Supernatural content, moved Horizon Worlds away from Quest, and directed most new Reality Labs spending toward wearables. Meta’s own 2025 filing says approximately 70% of 2026 Reality Labs operating expenses will go to wearables and 30% to VR and Horizon initiatives.
For consumers, that means Quest remains a supported platform, but Meta is becoming less dependable as a producer of first-party VR games, social worlds, fitness content, and productivity experiences.

What Meta actually shut down
In January 2026, Meta closed three acquired studios associated with its VR content strategy: Armature Studio, Twisted Pixel, and Sanzaru Games. Their work included prominent Quest projects such as Asgard’s Wrath and other first-party or exclusive VR titles.
The closures are significant because they reduce Meta’s internally owned VR content pipeline. They do not prove that every project at each studio was canceled, nor that every employee worked exclusively on VR. But they are clear evidence that Meta is reducing its role as a VR publisher and studio owner.

Meta also ended new content and feature updates for Supernatural, its flagship Quest fitness service. The service remained online for existing users, making this a maintenance-mode decision rather than an immediate shutdown. Without new workouts or features, however, its long-term appeal is weaker—especially for subscribers paying for an evolving fitness product.
Separately, Meta discontinued the standalone Horizon Workrooms app on February 16, 2026. According to Engadget’s report citing Meta, the company said Horizon had developed enough productivity functionality that Workrooms no longer needed to remain a separate application.
“All in on glasses” is headline shorthand—not a literal withdrawal from VR
The strongest evidence of Meta’s new priorities comes from its 2025 annual report. Meta expects about 70% of Reality Labs operating expenses in 2026 to fund wearables, with the remaining 30% allocated to VR and Horizon initiatives.
That is a decisive strategic tilt, but it is not “all in” in the literal sense. A company allocating nearly one-third of the division’s operating expenses to VR and Horizon has not canceled those businesses.
The more accurate description is this: Meta is deprioritizing internally produced VR content and headset-based virtual worlds while making AI glasses and broader wearables its main Reality Labs growth bet.
Meta says Quest and standalone VR applications remain part of its long-term portfolio. Its official Quest updates say the Horizon Worlds changes do not affect standalone Quest apps, and developers can continue building with Unity, Unreal, and Meta’s software development tools.

What happened to Horizon Worlds?
Horizon Worlds is being repositioned from a Quest-centered VR product to a mobile-first platform. Meta’s announced transition included these dates:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- March 31, 2026: Horizon Worlds and Events stopped appearing in the Quest Store, and several featured worlds were removed from VR.
- June 15, 2026: The Horizon Worlds app and remaining VR worlds were scheduled to leave Quest.
- After June 15: VR-world publishing and updating support ended, with worlds continuing through the Meta Horizon mobile app.
- May 2026: Final payouts were scheduled for the VR Creator Bonus Program as the VR incentives wound down.
The controlling source for the transition is Meta’s March 2026 update. Some earlier coverage suggested Meta might reconsider removing Horizon Worlds from VR, but the later official timetable specified the June 15 transition.
This is not the same as removing all Quest software. Horizon Worlds is Meta’s own social-world platform; standalone games and applications from third-party developers are a separate part of the Quest ecosystem.
Why Meta prefers glasses
Smart glasses solve several problems that have limited mainstream VR adoption.
Lower friction
A Quest headset requires users to put on a relatively bulky device and enter a dedicated VR session. Glasses can be worn while walking, commuting, shopping, or doing ordinary daily tasks. That gives Meta more opportunities to put its assistant, camera, audio, and messaging services in front of users.

A more natural AI interface
Camera-equipped glasses can identify objects, answer questions, record video, play audio, handle calls, and connect users to Meta AI without requiring a screen to be held or a headset to be worn. The product fits more naturally with Meta’s existing messaging, social, and content-sharing businesses.

More products in the pipeline
Meta’s disclosed wearables portfolio includes Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, Oakley Meta glasses, Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, the Orion true-AR prototype, and the Meta Neural Band. The Neural Band uses electromyography-based neuromuscular signals as an input method, while Orion represents Meta’s longer-term augmented-reality direction.
These are not all the same product category. Current audio-and-camera glasses, display-equipped glasses, true AR prototypes, and neural interfaces have different costs, technical challenges, and availability. “Wearables” therefore means more than simply selling Ray-Ban-branded glasses.
The financial reason for the pivot
Reality Labs remains a major financial burden. TechCrunch reported that Reality Labs recorded an operating loss of approximately $19.1 billion in 2025, compared with roughly $17.7 billion in 2024. Meta expected 2026 losses to remain similar before gradually declining.
Recommended Free Tools
Meta’s 2025 annual report separately disclosed approximately $21.4 billion in total Reality Labs investments. Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable. The $19.1 billion figure is an operating loss, while the $21.4 billion figure covers broader Reality Labs investment and does not represent a pure VR loss.
Meta’s logic is that glasses may reach more people, be used more frequently, and connect directly to the company’s AI and social services. That is a strategic rationale—not proof that smart glasses are already profitable or guaranteed to succeed.
What this means for Quest owners
What remains reasonably secure
- Existing standalone Quest games and applications are not covered by the Horizon Worlds shutdown.
- Quest remains an active hardware and software platform.
- Third-party developers can continue using Meta’s development tools.
- Purchased content is not automatically invalidated because a Meta-owned studio closes.
What is less certain
- The number and frequency of major Meta-funded exclusives.
- Long-term support for Meta-owned social VR properties.
- Standalone VR fitness and productivity products.
- Meta’s willingness to subsidize experimental VR content or creator programs.
Quest owners should expect the platform to depend more heavily on third-party developers. That does not make existing headsets unusable; it changes the reason to own one. The library available today matters more than the assumption that Meta will continue producing a steady stream of exclusive games.

Should you still buy a Quest?
Buy a Quest if you want standalone VR for its current library, gaming, fitness, mixed reality, or PC-VR compatibility. The platform can still make sense when the purchase is based on what it does today.

Those parts of Meta’s strategy are now less secure.
The Quest 3S is positioned as the lower-cost entry to Meta’s current VR ecosystem, while the Quest 3 offers more capable hardware and mixed-reality features. Current prices, bundles, regional availability, warranty terms, and promotions should be checked on Meta’s Quest 3S and Quest 3 product pages before buying.
Do not buy a Quest on the assumption that Meta’s future first-party content will resemble its past investment. Buy it for the existing ecosystem and the third-party developers still shipping software for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for VR developers
Meta’s message to developers is mixed. The platform remains open: developers can continue using Unity, Unreal, Meta SDKs, and the Horizon Start program. But the company’s own studio closures, reduced VR-world incentives, and mobile shift make Meta-funded exclusivity less dependable.
Developers should therefore consider:
- Building for multiple platforms where practical.
- Planning for sustainable sales or subscriptions rather than relying on Meta bonuses.
- Treating Horizon Worlds’ mobile direction separately from Quest game development.
- Evaluating whether a Quest-only release can justify its audience and support costs.
Access to the platform has not disappeared. The commercial backdrop has changed: Meta may still provide distribution and tools without providing the same level of first-party content funding.

What this means for Horizon creators and Supernatural users
Horizon creators are being pushed toward mobile-world development and mobile incentives. A creator whose audience depends specifically on immersive VR should not assume that a mobile conversion will preserve the same engagement, economics, or user experience.
Supernatural users should distinguish between continued access and continued development. The confirmed change was the end of new content and feature updates, not an immediate subscription cancellation. Existing subscribers should review the service’s current terms and support status before renewing, particularly if ongoing new workouts are central to the value proposition. Meta’s reported decision is covered by Wareable.
What this means for smart-glasses buyers
Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses are closer to everyday audio, camera, and AI accessories than to VR headsets. They may suit users who want hands-free assistance, calls, music, photography, or social sharing without wearing an enclosed display.

Buyers should also consider battery life, dependence on a phone and cloud services, privacy and bystander-consent concerns, workplace or school restrictions on cameras and microphones, prescription-lens support, and regional availability.
Ray-Ban Meta glasses are the most direct consumer expression of Meta’s current wearables strategy; Oakley Meta glasses target a more sports-oriented design. Official product information is available from Ray-Ban and Oakley. Neither product should be described as a full AR replacement for Quest.
Does this mark the end of Meta’s metaverse?
It marks a retreat from the version of the metaverse that depended on persistent, headset-based virtual worlds and heavy first-party content investment.
It does not mark a retreat from immersive or spatial computing altogether. Meta is redirecting its long-term vision toward AI assistants, camera-equipped glasses, display glasses, neural input, augmented reality, mobile social experiences, and a smaller VR ecosystem supported more by third-party developers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In practical terms, Meta is moving from trying to bring users into a virtual world toward putting Meta’s AI and social services into the physical world. That is an interpretation of the company’s spending allocation, product portfolio, and Horizon changes—not a guarantee that glasses will win or that VR will disappear.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Meta has not killed Quest or abandoned third-party VR. It has reduced its commitment to Meta-owned VR games, social worlds, fitness, and productivity apps while making smart glasses and wearables the main Reality Labs priority. For buyers, choose Quest for the VR ecosystem that exists now—not for an assumed pipeline of future Meta exclusives.
