Apple’s U.S. Back to School promotion launched on June 20, 2024, and ended on September 30, 2024. It combined Apple’s education pricing with an Apple Gift Card worth up to $150 for eligible Mac purchases or $100 for eligible iPad purchases. The promotion is expired and should not be confused with a current Apple deal.
What Apple’s 2024 promotion included
The promotion was available through Apple’s U.S. Education Store and participating Apple retail channels. The gift card came in addition to the qualifying product’s education price; it was generally not an instant reduction at checkout.

Who was eligible?
Apple’s education rules covered more people than college students alone. Eligible purchasers generally included:

- Parents buying for an eligible college or graduate student.
- Faculty and staff of higher-education institutions.
- Employees of eligible public or private K–12 institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico.
- Certain other education-related employees covered by Apple’s education terms.
Education pricing was a year-round benefit for qualifying purchasers. The Back to School gift card was a separate, limited-time promotion requiring a qualifying purchase during the promotional period. Apple’s education sales policies explain the eligibility and purchase restrictions.
The gift card was not the same as $150 off
The promotional value was deferred Apple spending rather than unrestricted cash. A buyer paid the education price for the Mac or iPad and received the promotional Apple Gift Card under the applicable terms.
Apple Gift Cards can generally be used toward eligible Apple products, accessories and services. That makes the offer more valuable to someone who expected to buy AppleCare+, accessories or another Apple product, and less valuable to someone seeking the lowest possible upfront price or who did not plan to shop with Apple again. Claims of “up to $250 off” could combine the education-price reduction with the gift-card value. They did not necessarily mean that $250 was removed from the checkout price.
Where could customers buy?
The offer applied to Apple’s U.S. online Education Store and Apple retail locations, with telephone sales subject to the promotion’s terms. A purchase from Best Buy, Amazon, Costco, a campus bookstore or another reseller did not automatically qualify for Apple’s promotion. Those sellers could run separate discounts or rewards programs.
What was not automatically eligible?
The promotion did not cover every Apple product. iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, separately purchased Apple Pencil accessories, unrelated services and other non-qualifying products were not automatically included. Buyers also should not assume that refurbished, open-box or excluded older products qualified.

Institutional, enterprise, business and resale orders could be subject to different rules. Multiple-device purchases and promotional limits also depended on the applicable historical terms; the headline value should not be treated as unlimited or automatically stackable.

AppleCare+, Trade In and financing
Apple promoted several additional benefits during the campaign, but these were separate from the gift-card incentive:
- AppleCare+: Apple advertised 20% off AppleCare+ during the limited-time offer. AppleCare+ remained an optional product with its own coverage, fees and exclusions.
- Trade In: An existing device could potentially provide credit toward a new purchase. A private sale might produce more money, while Apple Trade In offered convenience and an inspection-based value.
- Apple Card Monthly Installments: Apple referenced 0% financing for eligible U.S. customers and products. Approval, account and product restrictions applied.
These benefits did not turn every purchase into a $150 or $100 discount, and they had separate eligibility requirements.

Why some buyers should have compared retailers
Apple’s promotion was not automatically the cheapest option. A retailer might have offered a larger immediate discount, cashback, a bundle, open-box inventory or a different return policy. To compare fairly, calculate:
- The Apple education price.
- The price from competing retailers for the same configuration.
- The gift-card value you can realistically use.
- Any trade-in credit, financing cost, rewards or warranty difference.
- Your final out-of-pocket cost and the value of what you actually receive.
For a buyer who planned another Apple purchase, the gift card could be close to its face value. For someone who wanted cash savings, a direct retailer discount could be better.

The U.S. 2024 promotion was the Apple Gift Card version, not a universal free-AirPods offer. Free AirPods or Apple Pencil promotions associated with other Apple education campaigns could have applied in different countries or years. Regional offers should not be substituted for the U.S. terms.

What if you bought before or after the promotion?
A purchase made before June 20, 2024 should not be assumed to qualify retroactively. Apple Support could advise on any available accommodation, but retroactive eligibility was not guaranteed.
Purchases made after September 30, 2024 were outside the promotion period. Likewise, seeing an Apple Education Store page later does not mean that the 2024 gift-card terms still apply; education pricing and promotional offers are separate.
Bottom line for the 2024 offer
Apple’s U.S. Back to School promotion was worthwhile mainly for an eligible buyer who already wanted a qualifying Mac or iPad, could use Apple Gift Card credit and found Apple’s effective price competitive after comparing retailers. It was not a general sale, an automatic $250 checkout discount or a free-AirPods promotion. The campaign ended September 30, 2024, so any current Apple education promotion must be evaluated under its own, separately verified terms.
