What mining companies are merging—and how far along are the deals?
The key distinction is deal stage. A completed acquisition has changed ownership; an approved but conditional merger still depends on remaining steps; preliminary discussions may never produce an agreement.

Eldorado Gold and Foran: the completed gold-and-copper acquisition
Eldorado Gold’s transaction page records its acquisition of Foran Mining as completed on April 14, 2026. Eldorado’s announcement described the transaction at approximately C$3.8 billion in equity value. It said Eldorado shareholders were expected to own about 76% of the combined company and former Foran shareholders about 24%.

Anglo American and Teck: a copper-scale merger still subject to conditions
Approval is not the same as completion
Anglo American and Teck announced a merger-of-equals agreement on September 9, 2025. Teck shareholders approved the proposal on December 9, 2025. In that approval announcement, Anglo American said regulatory and Investment Canada Act approvals were still required and that it expected to work with regulators during 2026. The available cited update does not establish whether those conditions were subsequently satisfied or the merger closed.

The proposed ownership split was approximately 62.4% for Anglo American shareholders and 37.6% for Teck shareholders, according to the companies’ transaction terms. The structure is described as a merger of equals, but that label does not mean the two shareholder groups would receive identical ownership.

Anglo American and Teck described the proposed company as a top-five global copper producer. Their announcement estimated combined annual copper production at around 1.2 million tonnes, based on specified 2024 production baselines, and forecast roughly 1.35 million tonnes in 2027. The 2027 figure is a company projection, not a realized post-merger result; it depends on the companies’ assumptions and the transaction proceeding.

Synergies are forecasts, not guaranteed savings
The companies projected approximately US$800 million in annual pre-tax synergies by the end of the fourth year after completion. They also projected separate annual EBITDA revenue synergies from the adjacent Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca assets. These are company estimates, not guaranteed savings or revenue already reported. The time frame for the main synergy projection begins after completion, so it cannot be treated as an immediate annual benefit.
Why the asset mix matters
The companies framed the combination around complementary portfolios and copper scale, with mining and processing assets across Canada, the United States, Latin America, and Southern Africa. Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad called the proposed result a “top five global copper producer” in the September 9 announcement. That description is the companies’ characterization of a proposed combination, not an independently verified ranking of a completed producer.

Rio Tinto and Glencore: reported talks, not a merger agreement
Axios reported on January 8, 2026, that Rio Tinto and Glencore were in preliminary discussions about a potential acquisition. The report cited a possible combined valuation of around US$260 billion, but that was a press estimate rather than a company-confirmed deal valuation.
Preliminary talks can end without a formal proposal, and a proposal can change or fail to secure approvals. The cited report does not establish a signed agreement, shareholder approval, regulatory review, or completion. No later status is established by the sources cited here.

How to read the headline production and value claims
- Completed versus forecast: Eldorado’s page records the Foran acquisition as completed. Anglo American–Teck’s copper figures and synergies describe a proposed combination; they are not post-merger results.
- Production is not deal value: Tonnes of annual copper production are an output measure, while equity value and combined valuation are financial measures. They cannot be compared as though they were the same kind of figure.
- Synergy estimates are conditional: The projected US$800 million is an annual pre-tax amount targeted by the end of year four after completion, not a guaranteed first-year saving.
- Reported discussions are not transactions: The Rio Tinto–Glencore figure belongs to a press report about preliminary talks, not to confirmed transaction terms.
- Check the date and stage: Shareholder approval, regulatory clearance, and closing are separate milestones. A later company announcement or regulatory filing is needed to verify a change in status.
