Saree sellers use Facebook and Instagram video to show how a garment drapes, explain its fabric and craft, and answer buyers’ questions. The examples available are led by entrepreneurs and founders—not verified celebrities—and they show useful selling practices, not proof that live selling reliably outperforms other channels.
Are the saree sellers celebrities?
The profiles behind this trend describe business owners and entrepreneurs. The New Indian Express profiled Sangeetha Rajesh, while The Indian Express covered sellers including Satarupa Dey and Sayali Rajadhyaksha. The sources do not establish that these sellers are celebrities in the usual sense of the word.

That distinction matters: their experience can illustrate how a small or founder-led business uses social video, but it should not be treated as evidence that celebrity status drives sales.

What sellers show in a saree video
Demonstrate the drape and details
A saree is easier to assess when a buyer can see it on a person rather than only in a product photo. Sayali Rajadhyaksha described making simple, mostly unedited videos in which she roughly draped each saree and explained it. Showing the fall, movement, color and visible details gives viewers more context than a static image, though a screen cannot guarantee an exact match to the fabric’s real-life color or feel. Talk conversationally
Dey and Rajadhyaksha said they avoided scripts to keep their videos personal. Dey put the aim plainly: “I want my customers to feel like they are talking to a friend.” A conversational format can invite questions and make the seller more approachable; it is not a substitute for accurate product information.
Explain the textile and its makers
Rajesh has used video to document artisans and explain their work, including streams from weaving clusters where weavers could answer questions. That gives a seller a way to explain provenance and craft alongside the product. A short video still has limits: textile history and technique may need more space than a live demonstration allows. The New Indian Express, February 7, 2026
Answer questions while viewers are watching
Live sessions allow potential buyers to ask about a saree as it is being shown. IIMA’s public summary of its Suta teaching case also describes the founders responding personally to customer comments. Direct replies can make the experience more interactive, but the sources do not show that every question is answered or that interaction necessarily results in a purchase.

Improve production without making it a barrier
Rajadhyaksha said her team improved lighting and audio while continuing to film on an iPhone. The example suggests that clearer sound and visibility can help viewers follow a presentation; it does not establish that expensive equipment is necessary or that better production alone increases sales.
How social video may help a small saree business
- More product context: Video can show a garment being worn and described, rather than relying on a single image.
- Immediate interaction: Viewers can ask questions during a live session and hear a response in the moment.
- Discovery beyond a local shop: Dey told The Indian Express that her customer base extended to Australia, Dubai and the UK. That is her reported experience, not a typical reach benchmark for saree sellers.
- A story behind the product: Sellers can explain weaving, sourcing or artisan work as part of the presentation.
- A recognizable human presence: A founder’s direct contact can help a brand feel personal. IIMA’s Suta case raises the corresponding strategic question: can a brand keep growing if its founders step back from being the face of its social campaigns? IIM Ahmedabad Case Centre, July 22, 2025
What the numbers do—and do not—show
Some broad retail figures support the relevance of social and video discovery, but none is a saree-specific live-selling conversion rate.
- A Meta-commissioned GWI study, summarized by Meta in June 2025, reported that nearly eight in 10 Indian shoppers discover products through social media, with 96% of those discoveries on Meta platforms. These are findings about Indian retail generally, not sarees alone.
- The same study reported that three in 10 viewers purchased products featured in brand videos. This is a broad video-commerce finding, not proof of how often viewers buy sarees shown in a live stream.
- A Facebook survey from 2021, reported by The Indian Express in 2022, found Facebook Live video use increased 200% during the pandemic and that about 52% of online brand discovery occurred in public social feeds. These are historical figures, not current market measurements.
Rajesh’s profile in The New Indian Express reported more than 10 lakh sarees sold over the business’s history, a single-day sale of 15,000 sarees during one event, and live sessions selling up to 1,000 sarees a day. These are figures attributed to the seller and the profile; they are not independently audited industry results. Meta, June 2025

Profiles and broad surveys do not provide a controlled comparison of live selling with prerecorded video, marketplaces or physical retail. Social reach should not be mistaken for sales, and standout seller results do not establish what another business can expect.
Risks and practical trade-offs
Moderation and reputation
The Indian Express reported trolling and abusive comments during live sessions, as well as fake negative reviews. A seller going live should be prepared to moderate comments and respond to criticism without letting hostile exchanges overwhelm the product presentation.
Time and reliance on the founder
Live selling requires someone to present, answer questions and manage the session. When customers associate the business closely with its founder, that personal connection can also make growth harder if the founder cannot appear regularly. The Suta case frames this as a question of whether the brand can scale when other people or models take a larger role in social campaigns.

Information gaps
A live demonstration helps viewers see a saree, but it cannot fully convey every tactile quality or settle every question about care, origin or construction. Sellers need to give clear product details rather than assume a video alone answers them.
A grounded way to judge whether live selling fits
For a saree business considering social video, weigh the format against the work it creates. These are practical criteria, not measured outcomes from a head-to-head study:
- Can the seller show the drape, color and construction clearly?
- Can someone answer buyer questions and moderate comments during a session?
- Does the business have a useful story about the textile, maker or sourcing that viewers want to hear?
- Can the brand maintain a personal tone without making the founder its only viable presenter?
- Are product availability, ordering and fulfillment clear to a viewer who discovers the business through a video?
The reported examples point to a consistent approach: demonstrate the saree, explain its story, and engage with buyers in a human way. They show how social video can support discovery and interaction, not that it guarantees sales or replaces other retail channels.
