The bank said the disputed payments may have involved card details used on third-party websites or apps that did not require OTP verification. Those are statements attributed to Meezan in news reports, not independent forensic findings; the available reporting does not establish how the details were obtained or whether every case had the same cause.
What was reported in December 2024
On December 18, ProPakistani reported customer accounts of unauthorized Meezan debit-card transactions. The outlet said Meezan told it that the bank’s systems had not been breached and that customers may have entered card details on websites or apps that did not require OTP verification. Meezan reportedly said it had received fewer than ten complaints over the preceding week and had refunded almost all affected customers as of that report. These figures describe what the bank told the outlet at that time; they are not current totals.
On December 19, Dawn reported that Meezan’s customer advisory called breach rumors false, said customer information was safe, and said the bank was taking measures to compensate affected customers. On December 20, Business Recorder reported that the bank described the disputed payments as unsecured e-commerce transactions subject to payment-scheme chargebacks and said affected customers were being reimbursed. Some reports also described individual customers’ transactions on overseas platforms or social media, but those accounts do not establish a common origin for all cases.
Did Meezan Bank get hacked?
The reports establish that customers described unauthorized transactions and that Meezan denied a breach. They do not independently establish whether Meezan’s internal systems, a third-party service, or any other system was compromised. No independent technical incident report, regulator finding, or forensic audit in the cited coverage settles that question.
#1 Best Overall
- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
A disputed card payment, misuse of card details, and a breach of a bank’s internal systems are different things. A payment can be unauthorized from the cardholder’s perspective without proving that the bank’s systems were hacked. Conversely, the bank’s denial and proposed explanation do not by themselves show how card details were obtained. The available accounts do not identify which data, if any, were exposed or confirm that all affected customers shared one cause.
Dawn quoted the bank’s advisory as saying “the rumours regarding a data breach at Meezan Bank are entirely false.” That is Meezan’s statement as reproduced by the outlet, not an independent finding. Meezan also issued a 2021 clarification about a separate, earlier cyberattack report, stating, “Meezan Bank’s data was never hacked or compromised in any way.” That historical statement concerned the 2018 incident context and does not verify what happened in December 2024.

What Meezan said about refunds and disputes
In the December 18 report, Meezan’s reported count was fewer than ten complaints over the previous week, with almost all affected customers refunded. Business Recorder later reported the bank’s description of the payments as unsecured e-commerce transactions subject to payment-scheme chargebacks and its statement that affected customers were being reimbursed. These reports do not provide an independently verified incident-wide count of affected customers or total losses, nor do they establish the status of any individual customer’s claim.
If you are disputing a charge, report it to Meezan promptly and ask what documentation and case reference apply to your transaction. Keep the transaction date, amount, merchant descriptor, card details sufficient to identify the card, and any bank correspondence. A chargeback or reimbursement process is distinct from deciding whether a system was breached; the cited reports do not specify timelines or guarantee an outcome for every claim.

What to do if you see an unknown Meezan card charge
- Contact the bank promptly. Use Meezan’s official contact channels to report the transaction as unauthorized and ask the bank to secure the card and record a dispute. Meezan’s privacy policy says customers should report suspected unauthorized activity promptly.
- Secure related access. If you believe your online-banking Login ID, passcode, or another access method was lost, stolen, or used without permission, Meezan’s published policy says to call 111-331-331. The policy page does not show a revision date in the available copy.
- Preserve the transaction record. Save the statement entry, alerts, and any relevant messages or merchant receipts. Do not share your OTP, passcode, or full card credentials with someone contacting you unexpectedly.
- Follow the bank’s dispute process. Ask for confirmation that the report was received, the next steps, and how to submit any requested evidence. Keep copies of the response and follow up if the disputed entry remains unresolved.
How to reduce exposure to similar card misuse
- Be selective about where you enter card details. Meezan’s reported advisory cautioned customers against untrusted online merchants and websites or apps whose security they cannot assess.
- Avoid banking over public Wi-Fi. Business Recorder’s account of the advisory included a warning against using public Wi-Fi for banking.
- Watch for phishing. Verify unexpected requests for credentials or payment information through the bank’s official channels rather than a link or phone number in a suspicious message.
- Report a lost or stolen card promptly. The reported advisory urged customers to notify the bank without delay if a card was lost or stolen.
Meezan’s general privacy policy also discusses account-aggregation providers that may request login information and advises customers to consider those providers’ security practices. It says: “If you decide to revoke the authority given to an aggregation provider, we strongly recommend that you also change your online passcode with Meezan Bank.” This policy discussion is general guidance; it does not document the December 2024 transactions or identify an aggregation provider as their cause.
