His ambition is commercial orbital habitats: places where people can live and work in space. Vast’s Haven-1 is now in development, with the company targeting launch readiness in the first quarter of 2027.
Who is Jed McCaleb?
Jed McCaleb is a software developer and entrepreneur who founded Vast to pursue commercial space stations. In 2023, Eric Berger reported for Ars Technica that McCaleb was focused on orbital habitats rather than making launch vehicles the center of Vast’s business.
The idea is to build infrastructure for people to live and work in orbit. McCaleb described gravity as a long-term consideration for people spending extended periods in space: “Any time you have people in space for a long time, whether in orbit around Mars or working on asteroid mining, they’re going to want gravity.”
What is Vast building?
Haven-1 is a planned microgravity station
Haven-1 is Vast’s planned commercial space station. NASA describes it as a microgravity environment for crew, research, and in-space manufacturing. On January 20, 2026, Vast said Haven-1 had entered integration and set a first-quarter 2027 launch-readiness target. That is a company schedule target, not a completed launch or a guarantee of when the station will begin operations. See Vast’s update.

Artificial gravity was an early ambition, not a confirmed Haven-1 feature
The 2023 Ars Technica article described artificial gravity as part of Vast’s early station concept. That should not be confused with Haven-1’s current description: NASA identifies the planned station as a microgravity environment. The available descriptions do not establish artificial gravity as a Haven-1 capability.
Why did Vast acquire Launcher?
Vast acquired the small space company Launcher in February 2023. The acquisition gave Vast staff and technical capabilities it considered relevant to developing stations, including flight computers, avionics, and guidance, navigation, and control work. McCaleb told Ars Technica that Launcher’s Orbiter vehicle was different from a space station but shared components Vast expected to need: “things like flight computers, avionics, and GNC are all pretty common to what we will ultimately need.”

The rationale was therefore not simply to own a rocket. Vast viewed Launcher’s engineering experience and personnel as useful to its broader station-development plans.

A private astronaut mission is separate from Haven-1
NASA announced on February 12, 2026 that it had selected Vast for the sixth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station, targeted no earlier than summer 2027. The mission is a crewed visit to the existing ISS; it is distinct from launching or operating Haven-1. NASA’s announcement describes the agency’s selection and target timing, not a completed mission: NASA’s announcement.

Commercial-station support is a separate question
In 2023, Vast said it intended to pursue NASA support for commercial low Earth orbit stations. NASA’s commercial station program page describes its planned Phase 2 approach, but the reviewed sources do not establish the final outcome of that competition. An ISS private astronaut mission should not be treated as a station-development award.
For an individual investor, the distinction matters: NASA’s selection of Vast for an ISS mission is evidence of a planned government-supported flight opportunity, not evidence that Haven-1 has launched, that the station is operating, or that Vast has secured a commercial-station award.
