MatPat’s exit from Theorist Media and his work with lawmakers are two parts of the same story: a creator-built company navigating a handoff, and a creator explaining to Congress how businesses like it operate. Theorist Media was sold to Lunar X in a multi-year transition; the price was not disclosed. Since then, MatPat and his wife, Stephanie Patrick, have helped launch creator-economy caucuses in the House and Senate. Those caucuses provide a forum for discussion and education, not proof that Congress has enacted broad creator protections.
Did MatPat sell Theorist Media?
Yes. TechCrunch reported on July 28, 2024, that Lunar X took over Theorist Media through a multi-year transition that allowed Matthew Patrick, known online as MatPat, to step away. NAB Show’s 2026 event listing also dates the sale to 2022. The sale price was not disclosed in the TechCrunch report.
The company was built by MatPat and Stephanie Patrick around creator-led entertainment brands and shows. TechCrunch reported that Theorist had 22 full-time employees and around 20 freelancers at the time of its coverage. MatPat told the outlet the company spoke with 10 potential buyers before selecting one that valued its established brand.
Why was the exit notable?
A creator business can be difficult to sell because its reach and revenue may depend on social platforms, while the creator’s personality can be central to the brand. A buyer also needs to see how the company can keep operating when the founder is no longer the public face.

TechCrunch described Theorist’s repeatable show formats and ability to bring in new hosts as factors that helped make a transition possible. That makes the deal an example of how a creator business can be structured for continuity; it is not evidence that creator-company sales have become routine. MatPat described the broader ecosystem as unproven.
Why is MatPat lobbying Congress for creators?
His early message to lawmakers was that full-time creators can function as small businesses, not just hobbyists. In TechCrunch’s 2024 interview, MatPat said he and Stephanie were explaining that creators can be employers and constituents, and that the way their work fits into small-business tax frameworks is not always clear.

Other concerns in the 2024 reporting included dependence on platform algorithms, which can affect audience reach and revenue, and the lack of common standards for brand-deal pay. These are reported challenges, not conditions every creator experiences in the same way.
The policy questions have broadened. The Washington Post reported in September 2026 that creators and lawmakers were discussing taxation, intellectual property, AI imitators and deepfakes, reuse of creator content, doxxing, and children’s digital privacy. MatPat has cautioned that creators vary widely in scale and type of work, making a single policy approach difficult.

What is the Creator Economy Caucus?
In June 2025, MatPat announced that he and Stephanie had launched the House Creator Economy Caucus. The Washington Post reported on September 22, 2026, that the House group had focused on educating members and bringing representatives of technology platforms to Capitol Hill. The same report said Senators Cory Booker and John Kennedy had launched a Senate Creators Caucus the previous week.
These caucuses are venues for education and discussion. The reporting does not establish that Congress has passed a unified creator-protection policy, or that either caucus itself has produced enacted protections. MatPat told Dexerto in 2025 that he and Stephanie had worked behind the scenes with Congress. He also said he was considered as a potential expert witness for an SBA committee but was not selected because he was viewed as too bipartisan or oriented toward general information. That account was reported by Dexerto and is not confirmed here by an SBA notice or committee record.

What should creators look for in policy proposals?
Creators’ needs differ, so a proposal’s effects may depend on what problem it addresses and who it is designed to help. Four useful questions are:
- Business and tax recognition: Does the proposal clarify how creator income and business activity fit existing tax or small-business frameworks?
- Ownership and reuse: Does it address ownership of creative work and how that work may be reused, including in AI systems?
- Privacy and safety: Does it respond to risks such as doxxing, deepfakes, or children’s digital privacy?
- Scale and work type: Would it fit both studio-scale businesses and individual creators, whose work and resources can be very different?
What the available economic figures do—and do not—show
Two figures cited in TechCrunch’s 2024 reporting illustrate the scale claims around online video, but neither is a direct count of the entire creator economy:

- Goldman Sachs estimated the creator economy could reach “half a trillion dollars by 2027,” as relayed by TechCrunch. This was a projection, not a realized 2027 value.
- Oxford Economics estimated that YouTube’s creative ecosystem supported “over 390,000 full-time equivalent jobs in 2022,” as relayed by TechCrunch. That figure concerns YouTube’s ecosystem, not the whole creator economy.
These estimates are presented here as TechCrunch reported them; they should not be read as independently verified primary-source figures or as current measurements.
