That is guidance, not a required rate. Delivery and service fees usually are separate from the driver’s tip, so check the checkout breakdown for the actual tip line.
How much should you tip for food delivery?
Gottsman’s recommendation, quoted by Consumer Reports, is 15% to 20% of the total bill, with a $5 minimum for a small order. Treat the percentage as a practical benchmark rather than a rule: the cited advice does not establish a universal or legally required tip.
For example, on a $40 bill, 15% is $6 and 20% is $8. For a small order where a percentage would produce less than $5, the recommendation is to use $5 as the minimum. Gottsman is an etiquette expert and author of Modern Etiquette for a Better Life.
Does the delivery fee go to the driver?
Usually, a delivery or service fee is not the same as a tip for the driver. Consumer Reports advises customers to check the website or app rather than assume a fee reaches the courier. At checkout, look for the distinct gratuity or tip field; do not count a fee as the tip unless the platform explicitly says it is a gratuity paid to the delivery person.

Consumer Reports’ 2020 Food Delivery Apps & Fee Transparency report documented fee and tip presentation in the checkout flows it examined. That is historical interface evidence, not a description of the apps’ current screens, and the report said its work was not statistically representative of the U.S. population.
Do app tips go to the delivery person?
The answer depends on the platform’s stated policy. On the help pages cited here, both Uber Eats and DoorDash say customer tips go to the delivery person or Dasher:

- Uber Eats: Its help page says tipping is optional, 100% of an in-app tip goes to the delivery person, and cash tips are also possible. It also describes an option to add a tip after an order, up to 40 days after completion. Features and timing can change, so check Uber Eats’ current help information for your order.
- DoorDash: Its Dasher Pay page says Dashers receive 100% of customer tips. DoorDash describes Dasher pay as base pay, tips, and applicable promotions; it says base pay varies with estimated time, distance, and offer desirability.
These are statements by the named platforms about their own systems, not a guarantee about every delivery service. Gottsman’s quoted advice is to “Always check the website or app.”
Should you tip before or after delivery?
Follow the options available in the service you use. Uber Eats says customers can tip in the app and can also tip in cash; its help page describes adding a tip after completion within the stated window. DoorDash’s cited pay page confirms that Dashers receive customer tips, but does not establish a comparable post-delivery timing option. If you prefer to decide after the delivery, check the app’s current options or use cash where available.

Why tipping advice can differ
Published recommendations are not perfectly uniform. A 2019 Consumer Reports tipping guide recommended 20% of the entire bill or $3 to $5, whichever was higher. Gottsman’s more recent, delivery-specific guidance is 15% to 20%, with at least $5 for a small order. The older guide is a separate recommendation, not a reason to combine the figures into a single formula.
Consumer Reports reported in a December 2023 survey of 2,027 U.S. adults that 64% said they were asked to tip “much” or “somewhat” more often than five years earlier. This measures how often respondents said they were asked, not how much they prefer to tip or what delivery drivers earn.
