Mastercard Crypto Credential: How Its P2P Crypto Transfers Work

Mastercard Crypto Credential uses verified aliases and compatibility checks for crypto transfers between participating providers. Availability, costs and supported assets vary by country and platform.

Mastercard Crypto Credential is a real peer-to-peer crypto transfer service, but it is not a new Mastercard app or a universal remittance network. Its first live pilot, announced May 29, 2024, let customers of participating crypto platforms send crypto using a verified username instead of manually entering a long blockchain address. It has since expanded its partner ecosystem and added a self-custody option, but access still depends on country, provider, asset and blockchain.

What Mastercard Crypto Credential does

Crypto Credential is a credentialing and verification layer used by participating digital-asset service providers. A user registers a username through an eligible provider; before a transfer, the system can check that the recipient’s alias is valid and that the recipient can accept the selected asset on the selected blockchain. Mastercard says participating providers can also exchange compliance information for cross-border transfers.

The crypto remains associated with the user’s exchange or wallet, and the relevant provider handles the transaction. Mastercard says it is not acting as a virtual-asset service provider, wallet, bank, payment institution or money-services business. Crypto Credential is not a Mastercard card payment, does not itself convert crypto into fiat, and does not guarantee a token’s value or a recipient’s trustworthiness. Mastercard’s product page describes the credential and provider ecosystem.

What launched in 2024—and where

Mastercard announced the first live peer-to-peer pilot transactions on May 29, 2024, with Bit2Me, Lirium and Mercado Bitcoin. The announcement named these participating countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, France, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Uruguay. Mastercard described domestic and cross-border transfers across multiple currencies and blockchains, subject to provider participation and user eligibility; this was not coverage of the whole EU or all of Latin America. The pilot announcement explains the initial rollout.

The concept predates the live pilot: Mastercard announced Crypto Credential in April 2023 as a way to establish standards and trust for blockchain interactions. That launch announcement describes the original initiative.

How a Crypto Credential transfer works

The exact screens and steps vary by provider. In general, the sender and recipient both need eligible provider or wallet access, and the recipient must be reachable through the credential system.

  1. Join a participating provider. Use an exchange, wallet or credential issuer that offers the feature in your country.
  2. Complete required verification. The provider may require identity checks and other compliance information.
  3. Register or obtain a username. The credential associates the alias with the eligible account or wallet.
  4. Enter the recipient’s alias. This replaces manually copying a long address where the participating providers support the route.
  5. Select the asset and blockchain. The available choices depend on the providers and the recipient’s setup.
  6. Review the checks and costs. Confirm that the alias is valid, the recipient can accept that asset and chain, and the amount, fees and any conversion rate are correct.
  7. Confirm through the provider. If checks pass, the relevant service provider submits or facilitates the blockchain transaction. Save the confirmation or transaction record.

Mastercard says its system exchanges metadata between providers so users need not know in advance which assets or networks a recipient supports. A compatibility check can help prevent a transfer to an unsupported asset or chain, but it is not a general guarantee against mistakes or fraud.

Who can use it now?

Mastercard’s current product page names participating virtual-asset providers including Ataix, Bit2Me, Biteeu, Bybit, Mercado Bitcoin and Lulubit, and identifies Mercuryo for certain self-custody users. The wider ecosystem has also included partners such as Coins.ph, Wirex, Polygon, Fuze, CoinMENA and Intebix. The role of a named company can differ: it may be a consumer provider, credential issuer, technical or ecosystem partner, rather than an app offering every feature to every customer.

Mastercard announced a UAE and Kazakhstan expansion in January 2025 involving CoinMENA, ATAIX Eurasia, Intebix and Fuze. The regional announcement identifies that expansion. Mastercard’s July 2025 general terms and June 2025 self-custody terms list authorized countries, but legal eligibility lists do not prove that every provider or feature is active in each listed market. Check the provider’s own current availability and the applicable terms before relying on access: general terms and self-custody terms.

Self-custody expansion

In November 2025, Mastercard, Mercuryo and Polygon announced an expansion involving self-custody wallets. Mastercard identifies Mercuryo as the issuer and Polygon as the first native blockchain named for this use case; the credential concept includes a non-transferable “SoulBound Token” linked to a verified self-custody address. Mastercard’s current page directs European and U.S. self-custody users to Mercuryo, but eligibility and activation remain subject to provider and market conditions. Mastercard’s explanation of the expansion sets out that model.

How it differs from a regular crypto transfer

Feature Ordinary wallet-address transfer Crypto Credential transfer
Destination Sender enters or scans a blockchain address. Sender can use a registered alias when both sides and providers support the feature.
Recipient and network checks Depend on the wallet or exchange; users often need to verify the address and network themselves. Participating providers can check the alias and whether the recipient supports the selected asset and chain.
Provider requirement Can be sent directly between compatible wallets, subject to the chain and asset. Requires participating providers or other eligible credential participants on the transaction.
Identity and compliance Depend on the wallets, exchanges, jurisdictions and transaction route. Provider verification and cross-border compliance information may be required; the alias does not make a transfer anonymous.
Reversibility Blockchain transfers are generally difficult or impossible to reverse once confirmed. The alias does not make an otherwise completed blockchain transaction universally reversible.
Fees May include provider charges and blockchain network fees. Fees remain provider- and network-dependent; Mastercard has not published a universal fee schedule.

Fees, timing and limits to check

There is no universal Crypto Credential price, transfer limit or settlement-time promise in the cited Mastercard materials. Before sending, check the provider’s current terms for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Withdrawal or transfer charges and the blockchain network fee.
  • Trading, conversion or foreign-exchange spread, if crypto must be bought, sold or converted.
  • Deposit and cash-out charges, and whether the recipient can withdraw to a bank, mobile-money service or cash channel.
  • Minimums, maximums, daily limits and any account-level restrictions.
  • Estimated processing time and what happens during network congestion or compliance review.

A username makes addressing simpler; it does not guarantee instant settlement. Blockchain confirmation, provider processing, network conditions and risk or compliance checks can all affect timing.

Exchange account or self-custody wallet?

Exchange-based transfers

An exchange may be more familiar to users who already hold crypto there and may provide account support or fiat on- and off-ramps. In return, the user relies on the provider to safeguard the account and process transfers. Check the provider’s local regulatory status, custody terms, support channels and error-recovery policy; availability of the credential does not establish that funds are insured.

Self-custody transfers

With self-custody, the user controls the private keys rather than relying on an exchange to hold them. That control also means the user is responsible for protecting the recovery phrase and signing the correct transaction. Mastercard notes that a wrongly executed self-custody payment may have no practical recourse. Do not share a recovery phrase or private key with anyone claiming to provide credential support.

What “verified” means—and what it does not

Verification means the participating provider has applied the relevant credential process and its required checks. It does not establish that the person behind an alias is known to you, honest or financially reliable. Nor does it mean the asset is safe, a transaction is insured, Mastercard will reimburse a loss, or the transfer has no tax or regulatory consequences.

Mastercard says Crypto Credential supports exchange of Travel Rule information for cross-border transactions. The Travel Rule is a compliance requirement intended to improve transparency around certain virtual-asset transfers. As a result, a transfer may involve identity checks, additional sender or recipient details, geographic restrictions, limits, review delays or refusal. Mastercard’s pilot announcement describes this compliance support.

Risks and failure cases

  • Recipient is not on the credential network: A normal blockchain address is not automatically a Crypto Credential username. Mastercard’s terms say the service functions only when digital-asset service providers are involved.
  • Unsupported asset or chain: A compatibility warning may prevent a mismatched transfer from proceeding, but still check the asset, network, alias and amount before authorizing.
  • Scams or impersonation: A valid alias does not prove it belongs to the person you intend to pay. Confirm the username through a trusted channel. Ignore demands to send crypto to “verify” an account or recover funds.
  • Privacy expectations: An alias is not anonymity. Provider identity checks and compliance data exchange can apply.
  • Volatility and conversion: The recipient may receive crypto, not fiat, and its value can change before it is converted. Stablecoins can reduce price swings but still carry issuer, redemption and regulatory risks.
  • Local rules: A credential does not bypass sanctions, anti-money-laundering rules, tax obligations or provider restrictions.

Is this Mastercard Send or a card payment?

No. Crypto Credential concerns blockchain transfers between participating crypto providers and wallets; a Mastercard-branded payment card is not inherently required. Mastercard Send is a separate business-to-business infrastructure product for near-real-time payments and disbursements, not the same crypto alias service.

It is also distinct from Mastercard’s stablecoin settlement and merchant initiatives, including the Multi-Token Network, and from its Crypto Partner Program. Mastercard announced that broader collaboration program in March 2026 with more than 100 participating companies; that figure describes the partner program, not the number of consumer providers offering Crypto Credential transfers. Mastercard’s stablecoin capabilities announcement and its Crypto Partner Program announcement describe those separate initiatives.

Who may find it useful

Crypto Credential is most relevant to people who already use a participating provider, can confirm that the recipient uses a compatible provider or wallet, and want help avoiding address-entry or network-compatibility mistakes. It is a poor fit if you need anonymous transfers, guaranteed fiat delivery, universal wallet compatibility, a chargeback or an established no-fee remittance route. If your recipient needs cash or a bank deposit rather than crypto, compare a conventional remittance service and its total delivery cost instead.
