Atlassian Bought Trello for $425 Million: What Happened to the Beloved App?

Atlassian announced a roughly $425 million Trello acquisition in 2017. The deal’s accounting value was different, but Trello remained a standalone product under Atlassian.

Yes—the deal was real, but it is a 2017 story, not a new announcement. Atlassian announced on January 9, 2017, that it would acquire Trello for approximately $425 million. That was the announced transaction value, not a cash-only payment; Atlassian later reported an accounting purchase price of about $384 million. Trello was not shut down or folded into Jira: Atlassian said it would remain a standalone service, and Trello continues to operate as an Atlassian product.

What Atlassian agreed to buy

Atlassian Corporation Plc announced a definitive agreement to acquire Trello, Inc. on January 9, 2017. It expected the transaction to close in its fiscal third quarter, which ended March 31, subject to closing conditions and regulatory clearance. Atlassian’s fiscal 2017 annual report says the acquisition occurred in February 2017.

The announcement valued the deal at approximately $425 million: about $360 million in cash, with the remainder in Atlassian shares, restricted stock units and options. That mix matters: it is inaccurate to describe the deal as $425 million paid in cash. Atlassian’s January 2017 announcement set out the expected terms, while its fiscal 2017 annual report records the timing of completion.

Why Trello mattered to Atlassian

Trello’s appeal was its low-friction visual model: boards contain lists, and lists contain cards that users can move as work progresses. The same approach can organize a household project, editorial calendar, hiring process, event or software task list. It was approachable for individuals and teams that did not want to configure a heavyweight project-management system first.

  • COOPERATIVE ELEMENTS: Players collaborate to decode treasure maps while competing to reach treasure locations first, creating an engaging mix of cooperation and competition

  • STRATEGIC DEPTH: Combines deduction, map reading, and tactical movement as players piece together clues about treasure locations while navigating the island's diverse terrain

That gave Atlassian a product with a broader audience than its established tools. Jira was especially associated with structured workflows and software teams; Confluence supported documentation and collaborative knowledge work. Atlassian described Trello as a flexible, visual complement between those products’ more structured and free-form modes of collaboration. It also cited Trello’s use in Finance, HR, Legal, Marketing and Sales—not just technology departments.

Atlassian said Trello had more than 19 million registered users at the time. Registered users are not the same as paying customers or active users, but the figure helps explain why the acquisition could extend Atlassian’s reach. The company’s stated strategic case included connecting Trello with its wider teamwork portfolio and investing in development and integrations. Those were goals, not guarantees of lower prices, better features or a particular financial return. Atlassian’s announcement about Trello joining the company described its product rationale and the standalone-service plan.

Why some reports say $384 million instead

The approximately $425 million headline value and the approximately $384 million later accounting figure refer to different measurements. They should not be treated as proof that the deal was fictitious or secretly renegotiated.

Figure What it represents
Approximately $425 million Atlassian’s announced transaction value in January 2017, based on the stated consideration mix of about $360 million in cash plus equity-related consideration. Source: Atlassian announcement.
Approximately $384 million Purchase-price consideration recorded in Atlassian’s later accounting: about $363.8 million cash and $20.2 million representing the fair value of exchanged unvested employee equity awards. Source: Atlassian fiscal 2018 annual report.

Acquisition announcements and purchase accounting can present different values because the accounting treatment and valuation of consideration are not identical to the headline deal calculation. The annual-report figure is an accounting purchase price, not a corrected claim that the original announcement was false. Neither number tells you Trello’s revenue, the price multiple, or Atlassian’s eventual return on the investment.

Did Trello remain itself, or become Jira?

It remained a separate product, with its own brand and board-and-card experience. Atlassian said Trello would continue as a standalone service and that existing free and paid users could keep using it. Standalone described the service and product identity; it did not mean Trello remained an independently owned company or that its policies would never change.

For users, the distinction is important: common ownership can bring integrations, infrastructure and enterprise capabilities without turning one product into another. Trello could connect with Jira, Confluence and third-party tools, but it was not simply converted into Jira. At the same time, ownership by Atlassian meant Trello became part of a larger company’s commercial, legal, security and developer environment.

What changed beyond the product interface

That corporate integration is visible in policy history. Atlassian’s Cloud Terms of Service took effect for Trello accounts on November 1, 2018, subject to existing contractual terms for some paid customers, according to Trello’s terms FAQ. Atlassian’s broader Developer Terms replaced Trello’s prior developer terms, with the change applying to existing developers from December 11, 2022, as described in the Trello Developer Terms.

For a person with a few personal boards, those policy changes may matter less day to day than they do to a business that needs centralized identity, security controls and contractual review. A user can welcome Trello’s continued availability and still dislike a later pricing or terms change; survival as a product is not the same as a promise that every detail will remain unchanged.

Was the acquisition financially successful?

Atlassian said at announcement that the acquisition would dilute IFRS and non-IFRS earnings per share in fiscal 2017. For fiscal 2018, it expected dilution under IFRS and a result ranging from neutral to slightly accretive under its non-IFRS measure. Those were forecasts, not reported outcomes. The cited public disclosures do not establish a standalone Trello profit-and-loss account sufficient to calculate the deal’s eventual return, so a claim that it paid for itself—or failed—would go beyond the figures here.

What Trello looks like for users now

Trello remains an Atlassian cloud product, not an independent company. Its status page lists Trello.com and the Trello API as operational; a status page is a current service signal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted availability. Check Trello’s official status page for live service information.

In the pricing snapshot dated August 16, 2026, Atlassian listed Free, Standard, Premium and Enterprise plans. The listed prices and limits can change, so check the official Trello pricing page before choosing a plan.

A plan’s fit depends on the work, not on the acquisition headline. Someone whose boards remain simple may have no reason to switch because Atlassian owns Trello. Organizations should weigh their need for structured dependencies, reporting, identity controls and administration against Trello’s lightweight setup. Power-Ups and other integrations may carry separate third-party subscriptions or terms; availability inside Trello does not necessarily mean the add-on is included in a Trello plan. See Atlassian’s Power-Up terms for that distinction.
