What happened to Maju Kuruvilla at Bolt?
TechCrunch, citing reporting from The Information, said Bolt’s board voted to remove Kuruvilla as CEO. Kuruvilla confirmed his departure on LinkedIn and X with the message: “One-Click Checkedout from @bolt! Onwards,” accompanied by a rocket emoji. He declined to provide additional details.

Bolt described the departure as amicable but did not disclose a reason. The available reporting therefore supports the fact of a board-led leadership change, not a definitive explanation for why it happened.

Who replaced him?
Justin Grooms became Bolt’s immediate successor on an interim basis. He had been Bolt’s global head of sales and had joined the company roughly five years earlier. His previous executive experience included roles at Ultraleap, Datron World Communications and Qualcomm, according to TechCrunch.
The interim label did not last indefinitely. Bolt later announced that Grooms’ role had been made permanent. However, a retrospective account should not present him as Bolt’s current CEO without qualification: in a March 11, 2025 announcement, Bolt identified founder Ryan Breslow as its “founder and CEO.”
That announcement is the latest leadership information supplied here for Bolt. It establishes Breslow’s position at that date, but it does not independently verify Bolt’s leadership as of September 2026.

Why did Kuruvilla leave?
Bolt and Kuruvilla did not publicly establish a specific reason. Bolt called the separation amicable, while the reported account said the board voted to remove him. Those facts should not be collapsed into a claim that Kuruvilla voluntarily resigned or that he was removed because of a particular lawsuit, revenue target or operational failure.
The change came amid substantial pressure at Bolt, including repeated layoffs, litigation and a push toward profitability. TechCrunch reported that at least 185 employees—about one-third of the workforce—were laid off in May 2022. The Information later reported additional cuts in early 2023 and December 2023, with the December reductions affecting 29% of staff and total headcount falling by more than half from May 2022 levels.
Those events provide context for the leadership transition, but they do not prove a single cause for Kuruvilla’s removal.

These were Bolt-reported figures from that period, not independently audited current performance metrics.
Bolt was operating in a competitive market that included larger commerce platforms such as Shopify, which offered its own one-click checkout capabilities. The Information also reported delayed retailer deals and unsuccessful partnerships, products and acquisitions, contributing to questions about sustainable product-market fit. These pressures help explain why a CEO transition mattered, but they do not establish that any one of them caused the board’s decision.

Kuruvilla’s tenure at Bolt
Kuruvilla, a former Amazon executive, became Bolt’s CEO in January 2022, succeeding founder Ryan Breslow. He remained in the role for roughly two years, until the March 2024 board action.
Bolt’s earlier communications described Kuruvilla as CEO, while later company material referred to him as its former CEO. His tenure covered a period in which Bolt was attempting to scale its checkout business, win larger enterprise retailers and move closer to profitability while dealing with layoffs and legal disputes.

What happened to Kuruvilla afterward?
After leaving Bolt, Kuruvilla founded Spangle, an AI-focused e-commerce startup, in 2024. Spangle’s product adapts online shopping experiences and landing pages based on what shoppers search for or click.

TechCrunch reported that Spangle raised a $6 million seed round in March 2025. In January 2026, the company announced a $15 million Series A at a $100 million valuation. Those financing and valuation figures were reported by TechCrunch and attributed to the company; they should not be treated as proof that Spangle’s strategy has definitively succeeded or that Bolt’s strategy definitively failed.
Kuruvilla continues to be identified as Spangle’s founder and CEO in the supplied professional and company reporting.
