Maharaja Club is Air India’s unified frequent-flyer program: it replaced the Flying Returns name and absorbed Club Vistara. Members now earn Maharaja Points, qualify for Red, Silver, Gold, or Platinum status, and can redeem points for eligible flights and upgrades. The practical value depends on the current earning rules, award price, taxes, tier requirements, and restrictions—not on Air India’s “best of both” promotional description.
What is Maharaja Club?
Maharaja Club is Air India’s frequent-flyer program. Air India says it began as Flying Returns; after the airline announced a new name and identity on November 13, 2024, Club Vistara’s loyalty program was integrated into it. The current points currency is Maharaja Points, and the four tiers are Red, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Air India’s current FAQ explains the present program, while its program page lists member features.
Air India described the combination as bringing together the “best” of both programs. That is the airline’s positioning; it is not an independent comparison of member value. For members, the important change is that Flying Returns and Club Vistara balances and status were brought into one program under Maharaja Club rules.
What happened to Club Vistara accounts, points, and vouchers?
Under Air India’s merger terms, Club Vistara points and Tier Points transferred to Maharaja Club at a 1:1 ratio. Air India said members’ status would be determined using cumulative program points, with equivalent status retained at minimum and the possibility of qualifying for a higher tier. Valid, unused Club Vistara one-class upgrade and complimentary-ticket vouchers transferred with their existing validity and became subject to Maharaja Club rules. That was a migration provision, not a guarantee that a transferred voucher remains usable today; check its expiry and the current terms attached to the voucher.
How do you earn Maharaja Points?
Eligible Air India spending
Air India’s current FAQ lists base earning by tier for eligible Air India spend. Red members earn 6 points per INR 100; Silver, 8; Gold, 9; and Platinum, 10. Qualifying bookings made directly through Air India’s website or app earn an additional 2 points per INR 100. The bonus is subject to exclusions, so check the FAQ’s qualifying-spend rules rather than assuming every direct booking earns it.

Air India Express and partner activity
For Air India Express, accrual is based on the base fare, not the full ticket amount. Star Alliance flights accrue according to the applicable partner terms. Air India also lists 25 Star Alliance partner airlines and other earning partners, including categories such as hotels, retail, travel services, experiences, and the SBI Air India co-brand card. Rates and eligibility vary by partner; consult Air India’s current partner listing for the specific offer before relying on a points estimate.
Air India’s April 2024 announcement described spend-based earning, a direct-booking bonus, family pooling, and partner earning as features of the refreshed Flying Returns program. What can Maharaja Points buy?
Points can be redeemed for eligible award flights on Air India, Air India Express, and Star Alliance partners, as well as eligible cabin upgrades. Taxes and fees that apply to an award are payable separately. A partner-operated or codeshare itinerary is not automatically eligible: Air India says some partner codeshare itineraries cannot be booked as awards, so check the precise route and flight before transferring plans around a redemption.
Air India’s April 1, 2026 announcement said domestic award flights start at 1,500 Maharaja Points and cabin upgrades at 4,000. These are starting levels, not fixed prices for every route, date, or cabin. The airline also reported that economy redemption fares fell by about 30% on average across 80% of domestic routes and 75% of international routes. Those are Air India’s reported averages; its announcement noted that some routes had no change or a marginal increase, and the figures are not an independent valuation of a point. How do Maharaja Club tiers work?
Members can qualify using Tier Points and eligible-flight counts. Following the April 2026 flight-count change, Air India’s current FAQ lists these thresholds:

Tier Point thresholds were unchanged by the 2026 announcement, and the minimum qualifying Air India/Air India Express flight count is an additional condition. The numbers above are not a complete qualification calculation: consult the current tier rules for the applicable Tier Point requirements, counting period, and detailed flight eligibility. Tier status matters because it affects earning rates and some service or redemption conditions. The clearest newly announced example is award cancellation and rescheduling: Air India set different free-change windows by tier. Because rollout was described as progressive, confirm the rule shown for the booking date and itinerary before booking an award.
Do Maharaja Points expire?
Points have a default validity of two years. Under the current FAQ, an eligible Air India or Air India Express flight extends point validity by 24 months. Award flights do not trigger this extension, and the extension does not apply to codeshare, interline, or Star Alliance partner flights. So “points that never expire” is conditional: the extension depends on qualifying activity, not simply holding an account or taking any flight.

- Estimate points from eligible spend, not total ticket price. Check the fare components and tier rate, and verify any direct-booking bonus exclusions.
- Compare the award’s full cost with a cash ticket. Include separately payable taxes and fees and confirm award availability for your exact flight.
- Verify partner eligibility. Partner earning and redemption rules differ, and some codeshare itineraries are excluded from award booking.
- Check qualification conditions together. Tier Points and the specified eligible-flight count both matter; the flight thresholds alone do not establish status.
