You do not need to replace a valid P Series passport just because the design changed; it remains usable until it expires. Separately, Australian passport fees changed on 1 January 2026. Here’s what each change means for your travel plans and budget.
What changed in Australian passports?
The Australian Passport Office introduced the R Series in September 2022. Its polycarbonate photo and data page has an embedded electronic chip and a transparent window with a second coloured image of the passport holder. The visa pages include Australian landscape imagery and ultraviolet features. The passport has 38 pages, including 34 visa pages. DFAT said the move to the new series would happen in stages: some applicants would still receive P Series passports through the end of 2022, with R Series passports expected for all customers from early 2023. Both series work the same way at airport SmartGates.
The change was a design and security upgrade, not a requirement for existing passport holders to apply again. The Australian Passport Office says P Series passports can be used until expiry, provided they remain otherwise valid. Do you need to replace a P Series passport?
No. You can continue using a valid P Series passport until its expiry date; you do not need to replace it solely to get the R Series design. Check the passport’s validity against the entry rules for your destination and any transit countries, since some require a specified period of validity beyond your travel dates.

How much does an Australian passport cost in 2026?
The Australian Passport Office fee schedule effective 1 January 2026 lists these fees in Australian dollars. Confirm the official fee table before applying, as fees can change.

Fast Track and Priority fees are on top of the passport fee, and eligibility applies. The listed processing periods are service targets, not a guarantee that every application will be completed within that time.

How long does an Australian passport take?
Allow at least six weeks for a passport, and more time if applying for a child. Smartraveller’s travel-planning advice, dated 18 August 2026, is: “Allow at least 6 weeks to get your passport. Child applications can sometimes take longer. Where possible, don’t book flights without a valid passport.”
DFAT’s 2025–26 corporate plan sets service targets of 95% of passports available within six weeks, 98% of Priority applications processed within two business days, and 98% of Fast Track applications processed within five business days. These are targets, not promises for individual applications. Complexity, system outages and periods of high demand can affect processing. Can you renew, or do you need a full application?
An adult may be eligible to renew using the renewal process if all the following conditions apply:
- The passport was issued when the applicant was aged 16 or older, on or after 1 January 2006.
- It has at least two years of validity remaining.
- It shows the applicant’s current name, date and place of birth, and gender.
- It has not been lost, stolen or cancelled.
- The applicant can present it when lodging the renewal.
If any condition is not met, the Passport Office says to use the full application process. Check the official renewal eligibility and application instructions before starting.

What happens to your old passport details when you renew?
A newly issued passport has a new passport number, and unused validity from the old passport does not carry over. Update travel bookings and visa applications with the new details where necessary. The Passport Office may cancel your current passport while assessing the application, so if you plan to travel before the replacement arrives, check your situation with the Passport Office before lodging.
Are Australian passports electronic?
All Australian passports except emergency passports are ePassports, which contain an electronic chip. Automated border systems can use facial recognition and the chip to check identity and authenticate a passport. Emergency passports are chipless, valid for up to 12 months, and restricted in some countries. Before relying on one, check entry rules for both your destination and transit countries. How should you protect your passport?
Store your passport securely and keep it dry. Serious damage can prevent travel, including tears or cuts, unreadable data, marks across the photo or machine-readable zone, removed pages, or signs of tampering.
