Lotterywest expected close to 1,000 Powerball tickets to be sold each minute during the 4pm–5pm peak before the $100 million draw on Thursday, 16 May 2024. That was a forecast—not a final sales count—and it does not describe an upcoming draw.
What Lotterywest expected before the $100 million draw
In a media release on 16 May 2024, Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith said the busiest sales period was expected to fall between 4pm and 5pm that afternoon, with close to 1,000 tickets sold per minute. The figure described Lotterywest’s anticipated rate during that one-hour peak, not the total number of tickets sold for the draw. Lotterywest’s 16 May 2024 media release contains the forecast.
The jackpot had reached $100 million after six weeks without a Division One winner anywhere in Australia, Lotterywest said in the release.
Why the date matters
The headline refers to the Thursday, 16 May 2024 Powerball draw. The forecast was made before that draw and should not be read as a current estimate or as confirmation of how many tickets were ultimately sold. The available statement gives an expected peak rate; it does not give a final ticket count. PerthNow’s 16 May 2024 report matches the date and forecast.

How the forecast relates to Powerball odds
Lotterywest’s current Powerball page says a standard game involves seven numbers drawn from 35 in the main barrel and one Powerball drawn from 20. It lists approximate odds of 1 in 134,490,400 for Division One and 1 in 44 of winning any prize per standard game. These are different measures: the first is the chance of the top prize, while the second covers all prize divisions. Lotterywest’s Powerball page also says skill or strategy does not change a player’s chance of winning.
The odds are current figures from Lotterywest’s live game page, accessed in 2026; draw details and entry closing times may change. A high expected sales rate does not improve an individual entry’s chance, and the forecast does not establish that a particular number combination, popular numbers or a syndicate has better odds.
