The sale was a limited-time event, not an active offer today. Its advertised $1 was a starting bid—not a guarantee of a $1 final price—and Lloyds says buyer’s premiums may be added.
What the Perth auction offered
PerthNow reported on 26 August 2025 that Lloyds had launched the Perth event the previous day. It was one of 11 auctions around Australia that Lloyds said would offer $12 million worth of appliances from $1 each. The Perth lots included ovens, dishwashers and range hoods, and the report said the listed items were available until Wednesday that week. Those dates have passed.
The report described the appliances as being offered at a minimum 80% off retail. It cited a new DeLonghi oven, in its packaging, with a reported typical white-goods-store retail price of $3,600 and a Perth auction price of $47. These were figures reported at the time, not independently audited prices or current offers. The report did not establish final sale results or provide complete lot-by-lot terms. PerthNow’s 26 August 2025 report is the source for the sale announcement and quoted prices.
Why the low starting bid was not the final price
Lloyds’ general buyer guidance says a lot normally has a reserve unless its description says it is unreserved. An unreserved lot is sold to the highest bidder, even if that bid is $1; a lot with a reserve may not sell unless bidding reaches that amount. In either case, the winning bid is not necessarily the buyer’s full cost: Lloyds adds a buyer’s premium, which varies by auction. The $1 headline therefore described the advertised starting bid, not a promised final price. Lloyds’ buyer guidance explains these general auction mechanics.

What to check before bidding in a future auction
Terms can differ from one sale to another, so use the specific auction listing rather than assuming the 2025 Perth terms apply to another event. Lloyds advises buyers to check the auction details for inspection times, payment requirements, pickup deadlines, location, buyer’s premium and full terms. It recommends inspecting items where inspection is available. Online bidding requires an account, and Lloyds says online lots have photos and written descriptions.
- Calculate the full cost: Add the buyer’s premium to the bid, then consider transport, pickup and any installation work you may need. The latter are practical budgeting considerations, not terms established for the expired Perth sale.
- Check the lot itself: Read its description and review the photos for condition, included parts and any limitations. Inspect in person when the auction offers that option.
- Compare like with like: Compare the likely total cost—not just the bid—with the price of a comparable appliance, including delivery and installation if relevant.
- Plan around collection: Confirm the location and pickup deadline before bidding, and make sure you can meet them.
The cost-of-living context behind the sale
Anglicare Australia’s 2025 Cost of Living Index reported that a modeled full-time minimum-wage worker had $33 left each week after rent, food and transport. Its index summary put the remaining amount at $1 for a modeled single parent on minimum wage, even with government assistance, and $5 for a modeled household with two full-time workers and two children. These are figures from the index’s household-budget models, not predictions of every household’s finances. See Anglicare Australia’s 2025 Cost of Living Index and its 2025 report PDF.

In PerthNow’s report, Lloyds chief operations officer Lee Hames said: “Everything is brand new, completely unreserved, and starts at just $1 — so we’re sure every appliance will sell.” He also said the company was seeing more families treat auctions as their first stop for white goods, describing buyers as increasingly value-driven and comfortable with online auctions. These were Hames’s comments to PerthNow, not independently measured findings about consumer behavior.
The same report quoted Good360 founder Alison Covington on the difficulty some households face affording essentials. She said poverty can be “not always visible,” describing homes without a fridge or with a mattress on the floor, and said people need more than housing for a dignified life. Her comments provide context for why access to appliances matters; the report did not quantify the number of households affected.
