Kindle Direct Publishing: How to Self-Publish in 2026

A complete 2026 guide to Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing: prepare files, choose formats, calculate royalties, handle ISBNs and AI disclosure, publish, and market your book.

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon’s free platform for publishing Kindle eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers. You keep control of your rights, price, schedule, and files, while Amazon distributes eBooks and prints eligible physical books on demand. That removes the need to buy inventory upfront—but it does not make publishing cost-free or automatic. Editing, cover design, formatting, ISBN decisions, advertising, taxes, and marketing remain your responsibility.

The practical path is: prepare separate files for each format, configure your KDP account, complete Details, Content, and Rights & Pricing, preview everything, order print proofs, submit for review, and monitor sales and royalties after publication.

Kindle Direct Publishing: How to Self-Publish in 2026

What is Kindle Direct Publishing?

Kindle Direct Publishing is Amazon’s self-publishing service. It allows authors to publish Kindle eBooks, paperback books, and hardcover books without signing with a traditional publisher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For print books, KDP generally uses print-on-demand manufacturing. Amazon produces a copy when a customer orders one, so you do not have to purchase and store a bulk shipment. KDP also handles delivery to the customer and makes the book available through eligible Amazon marketplaces.

KDP is a publishing and fulfillment platform, not a complete publishing company. It does not automatically provide professional editing, an effective cover, a sales strategy, bookstore placement, or guaranteed demand. “Free to publish” means KDP does not charge an upfront platform fee for uploading a book. Your overall project can still involve costs for:

  • Developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading
  • Cover design and interior formatting
  • ISBNs, if you choose to supply your own
  • Image, font, quotation, translation, or other permissions
  • Advertising, launch promotions, and review copies
  • Tax preparation, business administration, and payment processing outside KDP

Your royalties are also reduced by eBook delivery costs or print manufacturing costs, as explained in KDP’s earnings information.

Is KDP right for your book?

KDP is usually a strong fit if your readers already shop on Amazon, you want rapid control over publication, or you want to test demand without buying physical inventory. It is particularly useful for commercial fiction, standard nonfiction, and ordinary trade paperback or hardcover formats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
KDP may fit well when… Another route may fit better when…
Your audience buys books on Amazon Bookstores and libraries are your primary channel
You want print-on-demand fulfillment You need bulk-print economics or unusual manufacturing
You want to control price, rights, and timing You need a publisher to fund, edit, package, and market the book
You publish novels or standard nonfiction You need spiral binding, specialty paper, calendars, premium art-book production, or complex workbooks
You are willing to handle marketing and quality control You expect distribution alone to create sales

KDP gives you direct Amazon access and centralized setup, but it also makes you dependent on Amazon’s policies, search system, review process, and account decisions. Consider whether Amazon-centered distribution is enough for your business before committing to an exclusive eBook program.

What you need before starting

Account, payment, and tax information

You can use an existing Amazon account or create one for KDP. Have your legal name, address, phone number, bank details, and tax information ready. Depending on your country and account circumstances, Amazon may request identity-verification documents. Non-U.S. authors may need to provide a tax identification number or complete additional tax information.

Your account, payment, and tax details must be accurate even if you publish under a pen name. The pen name is entered in the book’s author information during title setup; it does not replace your legal identity for payments or tax reporting. See KDP’s account setup guidance.

Protect your account. KDP says it will not ask you to provide your Amazon password or full banking details outside the KDP account. Treat unsolicited publishing services requesting those details as suspicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rights and permissions

Before uploading, confirm that you control the copyright and the rights to every third-party element: photographs, illustrations, fonts, translations, quotations, song lyrics, trademarks, and cover assets. Public-domain status can vary by country. KDP’s policies do not replace legal advice about copyright or permissions.

AI-content records

Keep a simple record of any AI tools used, what they generated, what you created independently, licenses or permissions for assets, and your human fact-checking and review. The record helps you answer rights or policy questions later.

Choose the format before formatting

Kindle eBook

A reflowable eBook is generally best for novels and standard nonfiction. Text adjusts to the reader’s font size, screen, and device. Use consistent heading styles, a clickable table of contents, functioning hyperlinks, properly prepared images, and clean navigation.

Children’s picture books, comics, graphic novels, workbooks, and highly designed books may require fixed-layout or specialized formatting. Amazon’s Kindle Publishing Guidelines cover reflowable and fixed-layout books, images, tables, accessibility, navigation, and quality checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kindle Create is one possible preparation route. It may be convenient for straightforward books, but advanced typography, complex tables, and sophisticated fixed-layout work may need more specialized tools or professional typesetting.

Paperback

Paperbacks suit novels, nonfiction, workbooks with ordinary layouts, and readers who prefer a lower-cost physical edition. You choose trim size, ink, paper, bleed, and cover finish. Available options can vary by marketplace.

Hardcover

Hardcovers are useful for gift editions, children’s books, premium nonfiction, and collectible editions. Hardcover specifications are not identical to paperback specifications, so it needs its own production checks and cover file. KDP’s upload-resources information currently identifies hardcover as unsupported in Japan; check the live requirements for the marketplaces you intend to use.

Do not assume that one file works everywhere. An eBook requires its own conversion and device testing. A paperback and hardcover may share adapted interior material, but their covers normally require different dimensions because spine width depends on format, paper, and page count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the manuscript and cover

eBook preparation

  • Use a logical heading hierarchy rather than manually styled text.
  • Build a clickable table of contents.
  • Use paragraph and character styles consistently.
  • Avoid manual spaces, repeated blank lines, and page-break hacks.
  • Check hyperlinks, captions, tables, and image placement.
  • Compress images appropriately without making text or illustrations blurry.
  • Preview the result on more than one screen size.

KDP’s manuscript-preparation resources and Kindle Create guidance can help with basic conversions, but the source file still needs human quality control.

Print preparation

Print files must be built around the chosen trim size, margins, safe areas, bleed, page count, paper, and ink. Fonts should be embedded. Images should generally be at least 300 DPI. Files should not be encrypted, locked, or contain crop marks, trim marks, comments, annotations, placeholder text, or unwanted metadata.

If an interior contains bleed, KDP states that it must be uploaded as a PDF. No-bleed files may also be accepted in formats such as DOC, DOCX, RTF, HTML, or TXT, subject to conversion requirements. KDP lists a maximum manuscript conversion file size of 650 MB. Review the current manuscript file specifications before exporting.

For edge-to-edge elements, extend the artwork 0.125 inches, or 3.2 mm, beyond the trim line on the top, bottom, and outside edges. Keep important text and faces away from trim and the spine.

Cover preparation

The cover should match the title, subtitle, author name, series information, and other metadata entered in KDP. It should be legible as a small thumbnail, use high-resolution imagery, and avoid watermarks, temporary prices, promotional claims, misleading similarity to another book, and template text.

For Kindle covers, Amazon’s guidance says to use RGB and notes that Kindle does not support CMYK. Paperback and hardcover covers generally need different full-cover dimensions, including front, back, spine, and bleed. KDP can add a barcode if your print cover does not include one, but you must reserve the barcode area. See the cover-image requirements.

Create and configure your KDP account

  1. Sign in at KDP.
  2. Complete your author or publisher account information.
  3. Enter payment and tax information.
  4. Complete identity verification if Amazon requests it.
  5. Open your Bookshelf and choose Kindle eBook, Paperback, or Hardcover.

You can publish multiple formats of the same book, but each format has its own title setup. Matching the title, author, subtitle, series, and other core metadata exactly gives Amazon the best chance of linking the editions to one detail page. Linking is not a substitute for checking that the live page is correct.

Publish a book step by step

KDP’s current workflow is organized into Details, Content, and Rights & Pricing. Interface labels can change, but the underlying sequence is broadly the same.

1. Complete Details

Enter the book’s:

  • Language
  • Title and subtitle
  • Series and edition information, where applicable
  • Author and contributors
  • Description
  • Publishing rights
  • Keywords
  • Categories
  • Primary audience and reading age, where applicable
  • Primary marketplace
  • Publication date for print formats
  • ISBN and imprint information for print formats

Write the description for the reader’s outcome and expectations, not merely a summary of your writing process. Use accurate categories and reader-language keywords. Do not insert misleading bestseller claims, “free” claims, or promotional language into permanent metadata.

2. Complete Content

Upload the manuscript and cover. For print books, select the trim size, ink, paper, bleed, and finish and provide an ISBN when required.

Use the online previewer. Check every page or screen for:

  • Page breaks and chapter openings
  • Table-of-contents links and navigation
  • Images, captions, and tables
  • Headers and footers
  • Margins, bleed, and trim
  • Spine alignment and cover dimensions
  • Unexpected blank pages
  • Font substitution or missing characters
  • Broken hyperlinks

3. Complete Rights & Pricing

Choose the territories for which you hold rights, set the list price, select the eBook royalty plan, and decide whether to enroll an eligible Kindle eBook in KDP Select. For eligible paperbacks, you can also consider Expanded Distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KDP lets you set a primary-marketplace price or manually set prices by marketplace, subject to current minimum and maximum limits. When ready, select Publish Your Kindle eBook, Publish Your Paperback Book, or Publish Your Hardcover Book.

Amazon reviews the book for content and quality. A book may appear quickly, but review, corrections, metadata changes, and distribution propagation can take longer. Do not promise yourself a fixed launch date until the book has passed review and the live listing is correct.

ISBNs: free does not mean ownership

A Kindle eBook does not require an ISBN on KDP. Paperbacks and hardcovers generally do, although certain low-content books may be exempt or treated differently.

KDP may provide a free ISBN for an eligible print book. Alternatively, you can supply an ISBN that you own. If you supply one, the ISBN in the manuscript and the ISBN entered during setup must match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important distinction is between ISBN ownership and copyright ownership. A free KDP ISBN does not transfer your copyright to Amazon. However, a KDP-provided ISBN may limit the imprint or publisher identity shown for the edition. An author building a separate publishing imprint or publishing the same edition through other channels may prefer an author-owned ISBN. An ISBN is unnecessary for a KDP eBook.

Metadata and discoverability

Metadata affects how readers understand and find the book. Complete it carefully:

  • Title and subtitle: Match the cover and other formats.
  • Author and contributors: Use the correct legal or pen-name presentation for the book.
  • Series: Keep series numbering consistent.
  • Description: Present the genre, problem, promise, or reading experience clearly.
  • Keywords: Use phrases real readers might search for.
  • Categories: Select accurate categories rather than chasing an artificial ranking.
  • Audience and reading age: Complete these where relevant.
  • Language, marketplace, publication date, publisher, and ISBN: Make them consistent with the actual edition.

KDP allows authors to choose up to three categories based on the selected audience and marketplace. Categories and keywords can improve discoverability, but none guarantees a bestseller position, sales, or advertising performance.

AI-generated content and KDP policy

KDP currently requires authors to disclose AI-generated text, images, or translations when publishing a new book or republishing an edited book. Under KDP’s stated distinction, AI-generated content means the tool created the actual material, even if you later substantially edit it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KDP distinguishes that from AI-assisted work. If you created the text or image and used AI to brainstorm, edit, refine, proofread, or error-check it, KDP says disclosure is not required under that distinction. This is a KDP policy distinction, not a universal statement about copyright law or the rules of every marketplace.

Disclosure does not guarantee acceptance. You remain responsible for copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, licensing, accuracy, and customer-experience requirements whether the work was AI-generated or AI-assisted. Fact-check nonfiction and inspect generated images and translations carefully.

Royalties and pricing in 2026

eBook royalties

KDP offers 35% and 70% eBook royalty plans. The 70% plan is available only when the book, price, territory, and other conditions qualify. Sales in ineligible territories may receive 35%, and delivery costs can be deducted under the 70% plan. Public-domain works are ineligible for the 70% option.

The more accurate model is:

Eligible eBook royalty = applicable royalty rate × eligible list-price amount − applicable delivery cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every sale produces 70% of the displayed price. Check the current pricing screen for each marketplace.

Paperback and hardcover royalties

Standard print royalties are generally 50% or 60%, depending on the list-price tier and marketplace, less printing costs. The applicable rate is not simply “60%.” KDP’s print formula is:

Royalty = royalty rate × tax-exclusive list price − printing cost.

Printing cost varies with marketplace, page count, ink type, trim size, and the relevant fixed and per-page costs. Long books and color-heavy books can have materially lower margins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KDP’s published example uses a 300-page, black-ink paperback sold in the United States at $9.99. In that example, the 60% rate and $4.60 printing cost produce an estimated $1.39 royalty. At $9.98, the example uses the 50% tier and produces $0.39. This is KDP’s example, not a universal payout; your book’s cost and marketplace may differ. It demonstrates why a one-cent price change can affect the royalty tier.

Use the KDP Printing Cost & Royalty Calculator for current estimates. Then build a broader profit model:

Estimated contribution per sale = KDP royalty - editing/design allocation - advertising cost - tax/business costs

Do not treat the calculator’s royalty estimate as your complete profit.

Payment timing

KDP’s general print guidance says standard-distribution paperback and hardcover royalties are paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale occurred. Expanded Distribution involves additional distributor reporting and can have a longer effective delay; KDP’s guidance describes approximately 90 days after the sales month in one context and approximately 60 days after distributor reporting in another. Treat Expanded Distribution income as slower and less predictable than ordinary Amazon retail reporting.

KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited

KDP Select is an optional program for Kindle eBooks. Enrollment can make the eBook available to Kindle Unlimited readers and can provide promotional tools. The key trade-off is exclusivity: before enrolling, read the current KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited guidance and agreement, particularly if you also plan to sell the eBook through your website or another retailer.

Kindle Unlimited does not pay a simple percentage of list price and does not pay merely for a download or borrow. Compensation is based on pages read for the first time by an individual customer, measured through Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, or KENP. KDP currently identifies its measurement as KENPC v3.0.

Re-reads by the same customer are not paid again as new pages. Pages are reported by title and marketplace, monthly figures can be finalized later, and the fund and per-page value can vary. A high list price does not directly determine Kindle Unlimited page-read income.

KDP displayed total KDP Select author earnings of $67.0 million for June 2026 when crawled. That is a historical monthly figure shown by Amazon, not a guaranteed individual payout or a forecast of future fund size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expanded Distribution

Expanded Distribution applies to eligible paperbacks, not hardcovers. KDP describes a 40% royalty rate less printing costs, taxes, and withholding. It can make a paperback available to distributors serving booksellers and libraries, but it does not guarantee that a particular store or library will list, stock, or order the book.

Availability can take up to eight weeks after acceptance. Metadata, content, or pricing changes may also take up to eight weeks to propagate. KDP’s current earnings information identifies availability in the United States and United Kingdom, but check the live account and help page because geography and eligibility can change.

Expanded Distribution makes sense when potential trade access is worth the lower royalty and slower reporting. It is not a replacement for direct bookstore outreach, event sales, or a broader distribution strategy.

Why KDP books get delayed or rejected

Problem Likely cause Fix and prevention
Metadata warning Title, author, series, ISBN, or edition information differs between setup and files Make the cover, interior, and KDP fields match exactly
Cut-off cover text Incorrect dimensions, spine width, safe area, or bleed Use the correct format template and inspect the full-cover preview
Blurry images Low-resolution source assets or poor export Use high-resolution images; print images should generally be at least 300 DPI
Unexpected blank pages Manual page breaks, section settings, or conversion errors Correct the source file, re-export, and inspect pagination from beginning to end
Missing or substituted fonts Fonts not embedded or unavailable during conversion Embed fonts and review the PDF or eBook preview
Rights or policy issue Unlicensed material, misleading metadata, poor-quality content, or unreported AI-generated material Document rights, disclose AI-generated material where required, and remove unsupported claims
Locked upload Encryption, file locking, comments, marks, or other problematic file elements Export a clean, unlocked file from the original source

If KDP rejects or delays a title, read the exact notification first. Identify whether it concerns metadata, manuscript, cover, rights, or content policy. Correct the original source file rather than repeatedly editing a damaged export, upload the replacement, review the entire previewer again, and resubmit. Contact KDP support or appeal if the decision appears incorrect. KDP’s manual-review guidance lists common quality problems and recommends updating the original files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proof copies and the production loop

For every print format, order and inspect a physical proof before treating the edition as finished. Check:

  • Trim, bleed, spine alignment, and margins
  • Page sequence, chapter openings, and blank pages
  • Cover sharpness and text placement
  • Color reproduction, contrast, and image detail
  • Barcode and ISBN information
  • Paper, ink, and overall legibility
  • Whether the physical book matches the Amazon detail page

Read several pages from the physical copy, not only the digital preview. Order another proof after significant production changes. The reliable process is prepare → upload → preview → proof → correct → publish → monitor → update.

What to do after publication

Publication is the start of selling, not the end of production. Check the live product page for cover, description, formats, price, categories, author name, series information, and edition linking. Keep records of orders, royalties, advertising costs, taxes, and author-copy expenses.

Marketing options include:

  • A clear Amazon product page and author profile
  • An email list and a legitimate reader magnet
  • An advance-reader and review strategy that follows platform rules
  • Release timing coordinated with your audience and series schedule
  • Series read-through and backlist promotion
  • Price promotions or KDP Select tools when appropriate
  • Amazon Ads and carefully measured external advertising
  • Libraries, bookstores, events, and direct sales where relevant

Keywords, categories, ads, and promotions are discoverability levers—not guarantees of rankings, reviews, or income. For personal-finance purposes, set a spending limit for launch activity and judge campaigns by attributable profit or useful audience growth rather than impressions alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KDP versus alternatives

Criterion KDP Broader distributor or printer
Amazon retail access Direct and strong Often available through distribution
Print-on-demand Yes Usually available, with varying options
Setup simplicity Generally high Varies
Bookstore and library strategy Limited or indirect through Expanded Distribution Often stronger for trade distribution
Kindle Unlimited option Available through KDP Select, subject to exclusivity Usually no equivalent program
Production choices More standardized May offer additional formats or services
Best use Amazon-centered publishing Multi-channel print distribution

Direct sales through your own website or at events can provide more control over the customer relationship, but you must handle inventory, fulfillment, payment systems, customer service, and possibly sales-tax obligations. A broader distributor may be preferable when bookstore and library availability is central. Current pricing and terms for alternatives should be checked separately because they change.

Final decision checklist

  • Is your audience likely to shop on Amazon?
  • Is your book suited to KDP’s standard eBook, paperback, or hardcover formats?
  • Have the manuscript and cover been professionally checked or rigorously proofed?
  • Do you understand royalty tiers, delivery deductions, printing costs, and taxes?
  • Do you need your own ISBN and imprint identity?
  • Are you comfortable with KDP Select’s current exclusivity terms?
  • Is Amazon-centered distribution sufficient, or do you need a broader trade strategy?
  • Have you budgeted for editing, design, advertising, permissions, and rework?
  • Do you have a realistic launch and post-publication marketing plan?

If most answers are yes, KDP can be a practical, low-inventory way to publish in 2026. If your priority is specialty manufacturing, guaranteed professional publishing support, or broad bookstore and library distribution, use KDP selectively or combine it with another route.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
